In all actuality, the rest of your drivetrain IS working, (i.e. the front driveshaft is turning as are the half-shafts), it's just not driving the front wheels. They are disconnected from the drivetrain by the hubs. It doesn't hurt anything at all. It's also easier on the front tires since they're not being powered.
