22re or the v6 ?
My buddy and I were just at high-lift trail day at red bird sra. So now we now we are hooked. So we are planning on getting a 90's model taco and the engine in the truck is the 3.0 liter v6 and trying to figure out if we wanna do an engine swap in our project to a 22re. So experienced taco operators tell me your opinion on what we should do?

I really do appreciate it very much. I am just trying to get as much info before I go buy something that won't fit or work.

22re/3vze were offered up through the 95 Toyota pickups, and the newer engines in the 95.5-on Tacoma.
If you get an older pickup with the V6, just keep the V6. If you want a 22re, buy a truck with it. Swapping will only cost you time and money not worth the effort.
Fwiw, both engines are fantastic, reliable, and torque monsters (hahaha not).. They'll do whatever you need them to, given you properly gear for bigger tires and properly maintain your engine.
The V6 engine bay is way more cramped, but totally doable, plus an extra ~25-50 horses, depending. And vice versa.
Good luck! Keep the questions coming..

I have a 1993 with a 22RE and it's ultra reliable no matter how much I tried to kill it. Now I'm replacing the timing chain and other worn parts. The Tacos did not come with the 22RE but 3Z-something or a non-22RE 4 cylinder. I drove my buddy's 96 V-6 Taco and noticed a slight more HP than my 22RE 4 banger. My wife and I thought of selling it as there are 21 people wanting to buy it but now it's part of our family and when I'm done with the timing chain, my wife wants it as her daily driver. Good luck and ditto to what Roark posted.

If this is going to be a off road truck only meaning no high speed commutes with the pedal to the floor for a hour.
Different story if you want to use as a work truck M-F hauling heavy loads of whatever. If so go with a V6 with a Tacoma it will be the 3.4 if it is stock.
95 and under pickup the 3.0 in the V6.
Whatever you end up getting just run it till you have problems or gain some time in the pastime.
Then figure out in what direction you want to go.

What everyone else has said. Also just swapping engines isnt all that you would be doing. You would need to weld motor mounts in and a wiring harness swap. Stay with what ever comes in the truck.
