22re overheating

My 88 toyota usually stays pretty close to the cold side on the temp gauge but the other morning it overheated on me on the way to work 10 minutes down the road. ive replaced the thermostat and gave it hell for 20 mins and it was fine. then next morning it overheated again and does not have any heat. which makes me think it may be the waterpump but i dont wanna replaceif its not the problem. Any ideas??

losing water?
exhaust blowing white smoke? smell like antifreeze?
oil/water mixed? you will know trust me by seeing it.

Are both top and bottom radiator hoses warm when truck is warm?

also...with radiator cap off and running...rev it a little...does antifreeze squirt out hole?

It did blow some smoke out after it got warm but wasn't overheating. Then had the cap off today and didn't start coming out or overheating

I was trying to walk you down that path gently. Its super frustrating to have happen. Have faith. they are really good motors usually.

Time for a compression test.

Did you rev it a little with the cap off? not just idling?

Did it overheat driving down the highway or sitting and idling?

Could be fan clutch not engaging. Or radiator clogged.

If it doesn't have heat, that's either a heater valve or flow issue. I wouldn't condemn head/gasket yet.
