22RE almost done. Swap in a different motor or stay 22re?

So my timing chain guide has decided to obliterate itself and the chain has begun wearing into the cover so it's only a matter of time. My 22RE has 335000 kms on it, and compression isn't great, so putting a new chain and guides in it is pointless.

So, now what? Do I keep it 22RE, swap in a Toyota 3.4 or Chevy 4.3, or maybe something else? 7MGE?

I'm still relatively new to the world of 4x4ing but am a very competent mechanic. What I'm looking for mostly is a cost effective route. I have a 22re core that I could rebuild, but I'm beginning to question if the $$ it would cost me to rebuild it would be much more than swapping in another engine.

What have you guys done/where would you go with this? Any ideas are appreciated... Engine swaps aren't a big deal, I have no problem doing it. The only thing is I'm NOT dumping a carbed or TBI motor into this thing. MUST be port injection, if it's a v6 it's gotta have 6 injectors... of course some of you know about that crappy spider injector GM uses on their older vortec engines, but it can be made to work.

How much did your 22RE cost to rebuild? If you have a 3.4 or 4.3 or even something else in your 89-95 rig, please share whatever insight you can.

Thanks

Dirk

Ton of variables as the day is long.
Depends on what you pay for the parts if your labor is free.
Depends on the vehicle.
Depends on the use.

Tons of info in our 3.4 swap forum.

Maybe look into a 2rz/3rz swap (1st gen 2wd/4wd 4cylinder Tacoma engines?)

Yeah, I was looking into the RZ engines as well. Looks like a pretty decent swap candidate.

Another common one is the 1UZ, ....which brings to light the question, ..."Do you want MORE POWER that'll push yer hair back,.....with decent mileage to boot?"(probably CLOSE to comparable to the 22RE).

3RZ is VERY well documented, and is more easily done to a 22RE carcass(truck)

1UZ is also done just fine into a 22RE rig.

5VZE is more commonly done to a 3.0 rig, and with less obstacles, from what I remember reading over the last few months.

5MGE and 7MGE(TE series as well) have been done in many of these as well.... I'm new to that one and the details... but WOW, what a easy motor to work on!(as is the 3RZ, and a couple others).

LOTS of 'PLANS LAID OUT' info available for you, and I wish you the best.

PS> As much as I'd love a mod/swap right now.... (I'd go with the 1UZ for many reasons)..... I have to say, I'm STILL, after 20 years of driving these, very pleased with the 22R-series motors. By searching around, I managed to get mine rebuild for around 800$, myself, using Manganese bronze guides, all new valves, Viton Seals, Dual layer Racing Springs and a 261 Crawler cam from Engnbldr(< on the head front)..... Hastings-USA Rings, Sankei-OEM Bearings(already had the pistons, cam and timing kit w/steel rail) and all the block and head work for 700$! Including a new to me 22RE long block-used w/usable crank and crank redo to 10-10over. A GOOD quality, ready to go 3RZ, 1UZ, 5VZE,.....what's it gonna cost? Do you wanna take that time right now to tear the dash apart and rewire/reharness? As well as all the other time and costs with the swaps(some more than others, obviously).

Just my 2cents, ....like I said, HAVE FUN......... I'm watching! lol.

Agreed, I like to go the path of least resistance whenever possible (which hardly ever actually plays out that way), so in regards to time and efficiency if your not looking to beef up, and sticking with an set-up you know runs well, I'd vote for another 22RE

+1 on the 7M motors, they almost bolt right into the engine bay and existing drivetrain. The complete motor is also fairly cheap compared to some of the other options.

I mean i guess it depends on how much you like the 22re....

I personaly like my 22re even though the compression is 50-60% of what it should be with 263k miles and still running like a top with no issues.....

Just cause a motor is worn doesn't mean its not useable....

Course re-building and re-conditioning engines is recommended...

Depending on whats worn or damaged you can re-build a 22r for like 300-400 assuming the cranks fine the head is fine the blocks fine and the rods are fine. You could even chip out the lil' extra money and bore the 22r .30 or .40 over.
