22r wiring question

I know this is a stupid question but it's been bothering me. When looking up info on the 22r I see it has a rather large wiring harness. Why in the world does a carbed engine have such a complex harness?

Distributor, ignition system, emissions stuff, charging system, not to mention the other stuff that requires electrical in the engine bay.

You think that's complicated, try looking up a 22re.

The gauge cluster alone uses alot of wires. Then there is an "emissions computer" in the kick panel, and then you have that entire fuse block there as well.

Then you have your headlight, tail light and turn signals wiring that has to go to the switch on the steering column.

That's just off the top of my head.

I have the same 22r motor and belive me I feel your pain. The guy I bought my 90 pickup from was "in the process of rebuilding it" and for some unknown reason decided to rewire a lot of the truck his self and to use one spool if wire to do it meaning its all the same color not to mention he added at least 3 difrent relays for im guessing 3 difrent sets of fog lights without bothering to remove all the old wireing. I have found cliped off wires that went god knows where. The problem has now occured the my windshield wipers, turn signals, and heater blower now just stoped working and I dont know why. Fuses are good and so are the fuseable links under the hood. The emergency flashers are good and when you put 12 volts to the wiper motor it works. Im stumped.
