1st gen 4runner rear diff.
Hello, I'm a new user to the forum but I've been prowling around for a good 6-8 months now. I've owned a 1986 4runner since early last summer and it has been good to me (so far). The clutch went out down in Charleston, and I had the tranny shop fix it and "rebuild the transmission"(noise in 3rd and 5th) for around $800. I still have noise in 5th, and the clutch works great now...
My new issue is the metal shavings coming out of my rear differential. I'm being quoted around $1000 to fix it, with parts possibly changing the price. I need to either do it cheaper, or get rid of the vehicle. What kind of prices am I looking at to replace the 3rd member? Do I need new axles as well? If I can get a whole rear end, would that be easier/better? I'm currently in Delaware, and not having much luck finding any used 'yota parts. Help would be appreciated!
Thanks in advance,

It sounds like the gears are wearing out in your rear end so it will need to be changed and you will have to get new axles seals so your looking at $450 for everything. but pull the 3rd member and check your axle shafts it might be cheaper to find a used 3rd but with that you might run into the same problem

Hey, if you are content with staying with the stock ratio gears (probably 4.10) you can pick up used third members all over the place. Look at junk yards, post on the forums, etc. Can probably pick up one for $100 if you shopped around.

$1,000 is insane, you could pull out the 3rd fly from Delaware to Denver CO where i'm at and I could fix it for you including parts for less than that, and I don't even know exactly what is wrong with it. Basically what i'm saying is you could go to the salvage yard and get a whole new rear axle from drum to drum for probably half that.

Welcome to YT.
Try salvage or your local Craig's List. Stock 3rds should be pretty cheap and are easy to install... as others have mentioned already.
$1000 repair.... why I ought to muffle gruffle blah blah gripe and squirrel. What a ridiculous quote.

So... (sorry for taking so long to reply)
If the gears are stripping out, should I also replace the outer axle bearings?
I've been told that the metal shavings will go all throughout the whole axlehousing....true? not true?
Thanks,
Manny
