I drop it don't to 3rd and it can pick up speed but then when it starts to rev really high I shift to 4th and I lose speed again. I haven't gone more than 45 in 3rd gear... doesn't sound safe

What is really high revs to you??

A fresh, strong 22RE should be able to make near 4000rpm for long stretches without harm.

They only make about 115hp at best.

Many more modern 4 cylinder engines make more power, but they are not classic Toyota trucks.

assuming that your speedometer is correct, as in, you have the correct tire size for the rear end gears you are running, that's about where i like to run it as well... 50mph at the max, if possible.

if your tire size vs. gearing is wrong, the speedo will be wrong, so we would be comparing different engine rpms.

With stock gearing and tires, 45 MPH is only a bit over 3000 RPM. Third gear pretty much reaches redline at 70 MPH. "Steep highway" is a very subjective term. If you're trying to pull what I'd consider steep in 4th or 5th then I'm not at all surprised that it's lacking. But out in the flatter parts a steep hill might not be much and you truly do have a problem.

Just FYI if you're new to these trucks, they don't have much power at all, less than a hundred horsepower at the wheels. If you have larger tires then they'll feel even less powerful with the stock gears.

What area are you encountering steep hills? And what rpm's are you at when your at 45mph in 3rd gear? What size tires are you running? Asking questions because the more information we have the better we can help you.

Not just Toyotas but 4 cylinders in general, I have always had to run them at a higher rpm when getting into hills. The higher revs really is not a problem for them. What are you considering higher revs?
