1986 Toyota Pickup Need Info.

Hey everyone id really appreciate some help here if you guys could direct me to any thread with info on this truck. Also any posts with pictures of this generation hilux for inspiration to build mine. I was given this truck today by my mother after she bought it for 800 at a police auction. It has since been parked for 4 months at one of her friends house so once I saw it I asked her to let me have it. I really dont know much about these trucks so all info will really help thanks everyone.

Well, it's hard to point you in directions..mostly because I don't know what you want! That also presents the idea that you might not have any influences for what you want. Anyways...

Read up! Go through the Build Up Section here on yotatech for your model truck and others. There's 2wd builds, 4wd builds, all of which offer different ideas for exterior/interior builds. Irab88 has a very good thread in terms of interior finagling..he's done a great deal of custom electric work, as well as some engine/transmission work you may be interested in. I'm not as familiar with the 2wd builds, but I can only suggest to read! Always, always read. There's no limit to what you can find out and be inspired from by just reading! That's why those threads are out there! (And maybe some of them are attention whores, but hey! Internet)

Welcome to YT! That truck looks like a great starting place for a 2wd build.

You want just a link for stuff to do to your truck? That's what build threads are! If you want to do to your truck what you see on that black truck, he's got some lift, aftermarket wheels, and offroad tires. Those are pretty easy. Now, the details of those, I don't know. That's where research comes in..read other's builds, search through them, devour what they have to say, and you'll find out what size tires do and don't work on 2wd Yotas. You'll find out what the best lift to have is, etc etc.

Thanks Duke i'm already going through some threads. I wonder where i can find the bed that the black one has. My bed looks like the bed from an '83 and all the pictures i find of '86s have newer beds.

Black one is considered a US bed, white one is considered Jap bed.

Your truck looks to have a nice, rust-free platform to start with. It should be an awesome, money-grubbing mistress before to long. These trucks/hobbies are addicting.....

So I just got the paperwork from my mom last night and the previous expiration date on the tags is 12/31/2008. The amount due is $775 since its been sitting there for 5 years and she didn't non op it. Is there anyway way to lower the registration fees? I live in California btw.

You have the correct bed on yours, it is Japanese style, looks like a perfect dash pad and overall the truck looks to be in great shape. I had a 2 wheel drive and Ford Ranger wheels will interchange on it if you find some of them that you like. Your motor is what is called the 22r ( just the "r" will mean carburator). Alot of the info on here that you will want to look for, or hear refered to is 2nd gen trucks. Refers to 4 wheel drives 79-83 being the first gen and yours 84-88 the 2nd gen.

If yours has the 4 speed tranny in it, a truck or Celica 5 speed tranny will fit right in with no modifications needed up until 91/92 I think and that is where they went to an elelctric speedometer.

My 88 runner build below has alot of fixes that can apply to a 2 wheel drive. Go by the post number, the pages change when info is added, it is usually just off by a page. You have an easy truck to learn on and Yotatech has alot of info.

Need opinions

Hey everyone, I have always wanted a bad ass Toyota truck like these and I might be able to trade my Chevy for one. But thing is, I need a good daily driver / hauler for my project car. I need it to be able to tow a car alright and also be able to carry stuff in the bed. What do you guys think? do these tow alright?
The one I am looking at is a 87 with a 22r automatic. Thanks everyone.

if you lived in the flatlands like kansas you might just barely be able to get away with it.

i wouldn't touch that combo for towing out here in california, and certainly not in the mountains of colorado.

generally, 22r/auto is going to be rather weak in the power department.

Thanks you. That's what I thought. And I am in Colorado. Guess I'll look for something else :/ thanks a lot.
