1984 Pickup 22R - replacing engine - quick question

Hi,

I am looking at a long block replacement from Rock Auto for my 1984 pickup. So I have a few questions:

1) Has anyone worked with Rock Auto and are they good?
2) Any other suggestions as far as decently priced replacement engines?
2) My truck is a 4wd - block cast # is 22R and vin code is R but is there anything different as far as 4wd like different bolt pattern for the tranny or anything I need to be aware of?

I'm looking at this engine: https://www.rockauto.com/en/moreinfo...sn=434&jsn=434
I'm not the mechanic - my brother is the one that is going to help me get the new engine installed - I just need to make sure that I'm buying the right thing and getting a good engine for the money.

Thanks,
Rich

Rock Auto you get what you pay for.

They buy new old stock

Stock of companies being sold for what ever reason

I hear they stand behind the stuff they sell but read warranties real careful . It can be a big fight seller versus installer if there is any question.

Famous Brand I gotta wonder ??

What is wrong with your engine and why not a local rebuild of your engine??

Another idea used cheap long block to rebuild

Know that the blocks changed sometime in 1984 so some can be early and some can be late the differences would be in the timing cover water pump .

head ports and pistons were different

The bolts for the bell housing are all the same pattern.

I had enough issues buying things that came truck freight I buy local

My engine has a spun bearing and it's ~200,000 miles - didn't think I wanted to bother with rebuild.

I hear what you're saying with buying out of the area. That's probably good advice... I'll have to look around locally and see what I can find.

Depends just how bad the crank is damaged .

Is it a Rod or Main bearing ??

A spun bearing is not always a reason to scrap a short block

Post where you are you never know someone might have what your looking for ..

I know I have some rebuildable blocks projects I never got around to.

It sounds like we need to get into it and tear it down and see just how it is damaged...

I must say I'm not that well versed in engines - I'm a computer tech by trade so I'm technical minded and I'm sure I can get my head around all of this but having never ventured into this I'm very clueless right now.

So now that I've qualified myself - I can't really say for sure where or what type of damage there might be. I know the engine ran out of oil and my mechanic at the time told me that it spun a bearing. I know that the truck would start and run prior to having the engine pulled but it could not be driven or revved above about 2000 RPM or it would start knocking.

My brother (who is very well versed in this stuff) has offered to help me put it on the engine stand and break it down to figure out our best course of action so I think we'll do that before I make any purchasing decisions. That I'm sure will tell us much more.

Thanks for your insight. I will post back here once I know more.

Rebuild what you have 1st. Unless the block is cracked it would be in your best interest to rebuild it. ANY motor you buy that is rebuilt is subject, no matter who did it, and trying to get your money back is a joke. Check out LCE, they have a vidio on building a 22R step by step. Although they made it a beefed out motor all the info still applies to a basic rebuild. Hers the link:
Good luck,
Ps. Don't buy a rebuilt motor................build it yourself and know what you have!
