@004 Tacoma 3.4 4x4 AT replacement

I towed my 04 Tacoma with a dolly and now the tranny is cooked. I did get forward to work but R does not work. Any idea's? If looking for a swap what other years can I look for?

How far/fast where you going? I've towed 20+ Toyota pickups/tacomas/4runners/t100's home with 0 problems on the trans. I orig took the drive shafts out, but after meeting a few people that tow them across state or country for years with no problem, I stopped the extra work. Most of mine were manual trucks, but all of them says to not dolly it. I always tow with transfer case in 2wd, trans in neutral. If you put the transfer case in neutral, it's locking rear and front drive shafts for 4x4, atleast on the older units.

Did you check your trans fluid? If the level is low it will slip, if it slips too much you burn out the clutches. If you run it too long with low/no fluid, the trans pump gets burned up. Depending on what the current situation of the trans fluid is and what you've done since the tow, it might be as simple as putting in a new pump. Smelling the fluid for a burnt smell would suggest if the clutches got fried or not. Trans fluid normally is checked with it running, but you can check it while not running to make sure it's bare min to the full line before starting.

You should have an A340F transmission, pretty much any automatic 4x4 Toyota made with the 3.4L should work, 96 Tacoma and up. I haven't had a lot of expernece with the 2nd gen Tacoma (or is it 3rd gen?), but all the 1st gen stuff matches across plat forms of what I've seen.
