A true camper top.
I saw this thing on the way to the MX races last week. I think it looks rediculous. The back end of the the truck was sagging so bad

I have seen similar to that before.
Now if I had a pickup, I would use the exact same roof top tent I have now and mount it like this guy did.
Looks like he can raise/lower those mounts, but not low enough to clear the cab since the tent is forward of the rear of the cab.

Being up off the ground and rain puddles makes for a better nights sleep.
There are many advantages to a roof top tent.
For one, it takes mere seconds to setup the tent, and there are no stakes, no ground tarps, and you track in no dirt.

This one is the most affordable one I've found. Costco always has great prices. I've been thinking about getting it. http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product...t21248&topnav=

I used to have a chev 1 ton dually with a cap, and for my tent, I put a piece of plywood on top of the bed rails, then put the cap over it, then you still have cargo space underneath, and just set up your air mattress on the plywood with sleeping bags and stuff...and voila...plus, if you have the rear slider you can even use the heat(of course, this was when gas was only $1.20/gal...wouldnt recommend it with todays fuel prices). Worked great till I had to sell it(had the 454, and only got 8 mpg)
EDIT: Almost forgot....you do have to cut a couple holes for the cap clamps, but thats fairly easy.

Hey Cory, no more info, but I will try to find the thread where I saw the pictures later.
It was over on www.expeditionportal.com
I would measure your bed, then hit a website of the type of tent you are looking at to see if it will go down all the way and clear the roof.
I think a cool roof top tent setup on a pickup would be to have a crank system like that with a whole top that covers the bed to protect gear and keep it waterproof.
Then when you want to access the gear, crank it up.
Or you could have a flip lid too on the bed, pretty much like this trailer setup I want in the future to house my tent.
Two flip styles
PS, found it.
Look up post # 216.

You will see some familiar names in that thread.
I will add my rig to that thread when I get some camping pictures.

Well, you have to admire his creativity, and willingness to recycle old materials and put them to good use. Hopefully he has a forklift to pull that thing off when he's not using it....

Yeah...that's a long bed. I wonder if there is a way to mount it reversed, so that the lip is on the back side of the bed versus over the cab.
I'm reading through that thread now...

Long bed would be nice at times but 99% of the time, I'm happy with the short bed. I personally think the short beds look better but at times, the long bed would be nice to have.
I'm wanting to take a camping trip to Disney soon, might be kind of hot now though. I'll let you know if I end up coming up with some dates.
Later,
Fink
