Is it true that 03/04 4R has "water repellent" windshield?

Would it be more gentle on the seals, gaskets, etc around the windows? I try to avoid getting rain-x on them. Did you order online?

Pep Boys had it on the counter real cheap. I've only used it once. When it rains I spray on a new layer of Rain-X before backing out of the garage. Spray it on, smear it a bit, then drive in the rain. The haze instantly turns clear once out in the rain.

It is true and in all Toyota literature and technical papers I've seen is accurately described as hydrophilic glass. They meant what they said, and I've seen it in action. I can't accurately describe how it works or what the coating consists of, but from Toyota literature and direct observation, smaller water droplets are attracted toward others, propelled initially by air turbulence, and combine to become larger droplets until gravity eventually takes over. Then the large droplet becomes a rivulet and slides off the glass surface. I remember reading a detailed description of the glass in an SAE white paper, and those are archived at their site.

I haven't used Rain-X in years. Maybe the formula has improved, but in the past it tended to stick to the OEM wiper blades and eventually caused smearing. Instead I use 20/10 to remove road grime especially during the rain and before pulling into the garage after the last run of the day.

Yes,

They've treated with some kind of hydro crap. I don't know about how the hydrocrap repels water, but water stains sure stay permanently on the windshield. I've tried everything possible: scour pads, amonia, sand paper, steel wool. Nothing seems to remove them. They're especially noticeable when the windshield is clean and is reflecting in the sunlight.

Will dealer replace it as warranty defect?

Do you think it's a good idea to have the winshield replace? since it might not have as good a seal as factory.

I know that many of y'all live in places that when it rains, it really rains. Just like here in Texas. I'm not a trucker, taxi driver or any other professional driver, yet even I have well over a million miles under my belt. When passing 18 wheelers in the rain on freeways there is a period of uncertainty about what is ahead of you because of the spray that the big trucks create. Having Rain-X on the windshield makes 90% of that uncertainty away as the rain and spray drops instantly become big drops and roll off the windshield.

Rain-X, even on the new coated windshields, increases driving safety in the rain. When riding motorcycles in the rain I have found that a coating of Rain-X on my goggles or faceshield to be a lifesaver.
