I am looking in the next year at replacing my 98 SR5 5-speed 4runner with an 03 or newer. Mainly I need the extra towing power. I bought a CJ5 rock crawler and trailer this last weekend and will need to pull it to the trails. My current 4runner has enough power and towing capasity but it's about maxed. I was looking at getting a newer truck but we also need something I can drive every day and has room for the dogs. That basicly leaves an SUV. I saw the new body V-8 will tow 7k. That great.

Anyways, I jsut drove one and was impressed. I'll be buying used and what are some things I should look for? I know about regualr mataince but I mean thing that are limited to the 03 and new 4runners. The one I drove today has the locking diff. Do they all have that?

Just some thoughts and advise would be great.

 

I would definitely suggest starting with a Certified Pre-Owned. Also, argue down the extension of the warranty. They'll offer it to you for $1200ish, try to talk them down to $700 or throwing it in for free or you won't buy the vehicle.
