fyi:wheelersoffroad black steelies for the 4th gen

just got off the phone w/wheelersoffroad and talked to them about their black 16x8 steel wheels. i told them there is concern about them fitting the 4th gen 4runners, and one of the guys up there is going to test fit on his '03 4runner sr5. i will give him a call back on wednesday to see the results.

I read your post just fine, no need for glasses just yet... For third gens, the big issue is fitting 15" rims on a vehicle that came with 16" rims stock. Wheeler puts out these rims that will fit on a Tacoma with 16's, but will not fit on a 4runner with 16's. So, just wanted to clarify before someone gets all excited that Wheelers 15's will work on their 4runner (3rd gen).

great news!

wa-hoo, the steelies fit! and even better news for you tracy, and other sport-ers, they will probably fit yours too. now this is secondhand info from wheelers (williemo here on yotatech), who got it from a conversation w/toyota yesterday, but it seems that any 4th gen 4runner outfitted w/the 17" wheels _also_ has the larger calipers! that means i, who owns an sr5, also have the larger calipers. wheelers test fit on an sr5 that came w/the 17" alloy wheels, and the steelies fit fine. they have 3.75" backspacing and were test fit w/ 285/60/18s! so anyone who has a question should probably call toyota to see if what is said here is true -- that is, if toyota puts large calipers on your 4runner. they can tell by vin #.

2003 SPORTs, 2004 SPORTS and LIMITED have the larger calipers.

The 2003+ SR5 and the 2003 Limited came with the tiny calipers

So once again, does it fit the 4runners w/ the larger calipers?

well atleast they say that it'll fit the SR5 models but with 3.5"BS... that must be pretty darn close! By any chance ya got the spec on that wheel? Offset n all

lance- are you sure about that? because according to toyota (or at least a conversation williemo had w/toyota) it is the 17" wheels that make at least part of the determination if you have the larger calipers, which makes sense. if you have the larger wheels, then you need/have room for the larger caliper. i have the 17" wheels and that being so, i have the larger calipers even though i have an sr5. the test fit was done on an identical setup to mine (sr5 w/17" wheels). williemo is checking as we speak and will post here.

:::edit:::

and he is checking on the specs as well

Ok,
I have tried these 16x8 wheels on my 2003 SR5 V8. The truck was equipped with 17" wheels from the factory. The wheel was bare (no tire) and it fit great. I called our dealership parts dept and asked for part numbers for front pads, caliper kits, and caliper housing. The only options that they listed was if it was equipped with 16" or 17" wheels. Part numbers for pads and kits are the same for both options. The part numbers for the caliper housing was different. There is no listing that refers to trim package (sport, limited, SR5).
I know they fit on my application. I have not tried them on a sport or limited.

Lance:
Where did you get your info?

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

The steel 16x8 wheels have 3.75" bs. That is a lot less than the stock (5.25" bs). Lance and a few others have 4.5" bs on their rims, and he already rubs like a mother on the fender and bumper. With the 3.75" bs, you will for sure rub even more than Lance.

I suggest that you stay with a backspacing between 4.5" and 5.0" for 285 tires. For myself, I am trying to find wheels that have between 4.75" and 5.0" backspacing. With this I should have the least amount of fender and bumper rubbing, but still have enough clearance for the upper control arms.

Again, if I am wrong with my thinking, please feel free to object.

2003 Stock Specifications:
SR5 - 16 wheels
Sport - 17 wheels
Limited - 16 Wheels

2004 Stock Specifications:
SR5 - 16 wheels
Sport - 17 wheels
Limited - 17 wheels

If you 4runner came w/ larger wheels that what is published in your 4runner then most likely it's a PIO (Port installed option) or Dealer added option to sell it for a higher deal.

Please confirm this with your Toyota Catalog.

Now for what Timber has said, he does bring up an interesting point. Can't really say what will happen but I guess we'll just have to see someone be a guinnea pig and try it out.

Good luck!

timber, that is a good point, and I agree with your suggestion.

I, too, am looking for wheels with that amount of backspacing so I can run the 285 without control arm problems.

Keep in touch!

well, i guess i am the guinea pig. i thought willymoe had tried them WITH the 285s, but i obviously misheard. thought it was a big (non)stretch to think he fit 285/60/18s on a 16" rim.... if they do not fit well, then maybe i can try out some wheel spacers (billy?...). or if nothing makes them fit, i can lean on you guys to sell 'em. worst case scenario: they were only $250. which reminds me: forgot to order one for the spare...
