Fog Light Mod - on when you WANT them to be on, not just with the low beam headlights
#22
My experience with this mod:
I performed this mod on my 2006 SR5 4Runner, and found the following:
1: the relay info is good, but the tab was the other one.
2. the 'constant power' wiring option allows all BUT THE HIGH BEAM option; the fog lights STILL go out when the high beams are on.
3. the 'fog light' indicator in the dash lights, even when the ignition is off, so there is a reminder. {:->
In short, this isn't perfect, but it works for me. Thanks, Travis.

what "other tab" are you talking about? if it's the same relay, the pins are the same, so hooking it to another tab just wouldn't work at all
almost 10 months later, and this is still working great for me BTW; no issues what so ever!

I'll have to take some pictures to prove this, but I did as the photos showed, and the fog lights stayed on all the time. Consequently, I used the other tab of the tabs shown as parallel to the sides of the relay. Subsequent investigation indicates the issue with the high beams turning the fog lights off is possibly a mechanical change initiated by the turn signal/headlight/high beam stalk itself, that turns the fog lights off when the high beam aspect is engaged- even when the vehicle is off (no key in ignition and no other lights are on). Remember, this is a 4Runner, NOT a Tacoma. It is what it is.

huh, they must just use a different means of switching the power on the 4Runners
I'm not saying I don't believe you, it's just odd that they'd make them operate so differently, lol

I tried this mod on my '12 and needless to say its a bit different in the fuse box area. Managed to get it figured out. They have a separate box for fog lamp and a few other items. ran the power wire right to the battery
new wire going to relay
wire running through the side of the second relay box
better idea of where second box is at
job all complete
on when i want them on

speaking of hacking into a new vehicle i had to relocate my trailer hookup do to smashing it the first time i took the truck offroading. I simply removed one tag light and put the trailer hookup in its place.

Wow. Best descriptive fog mod on the net. Speaking of which: does anyone know if replacing stock halogen fog lights with LED's will screw up the CAN-BUS and get bulb-out warning messages? (2008 Taco)

I think you can order can-bus specific LED's, can't you? I know you can do something about it when going to HID's; didn't have to with my 06 but I've heard of others having to do it on newer trucks, at least with headlights anyways, not sure about fog lights

What's hilarious is that I forgot I had done this mod about 4 years ago. My driving lights aren't working now but both bulbs are good. Was working on troubleshooting it and came accross this mod article. Though, Hmm mine just worked that way, then started reading and thought... Wait this looks familiar. Sure enough I've done this mod only tapped into a live ACC wire behind the DS headlight. Perhaps that's my issue. No fuses are blown, probably just a bad connection. However I've tested the big ones leading up to the lights and they're fine. More testing to do...

Anyone Have a OEM Wiring diagram for 2005 4th gen 4runner. I have most of the manual, just not a front lighting wiring diagram. It's definitely shorting somewhere forward of the hood fuse box relay. Neither lead to the actual fog/driving lights is live. Lights are fine.
This means it's shorting out after the hood fuse box and modified relay and before the driving lights on my ARB bull bar. (installed several years ago and the base connections to the lights have started to corrode. I've cleaned that up and dielectric greased it on both sides) but now it seems there is no power getting to them from the OEM source.
Side note: Does anyone know of a brand that makes a touch sensor for <12V DC current, mine all do AC. A touch DC sensor would be huge in troubleshooting this issue.

00 Tundra - almost works
Thank you for the very clear illustrations! I followed your guide with the first option, wiring directly to the power source in the fuse box, and now my fog lights work whenever, EXCEPT when I have my low beams on. Would you happen to know the reason for this? Any input would be appreciated!
Thanks again for the thread!
