BAD Mileage

I own a 2009 4runner sport. Nice rig. Except for the mileage. I get about 16.5 mpg normally.I expected that. But on a recent trip to Vegas, it dropped to 15??? Vegas is over 3000 ft lower than SLC. It is downhill! The dealer said that there is no way to reprogram the computer for better economy. They also told me that using the cruise control contributes to the bad mileage??? I do have a brush bar on the front and larger than stock wheels and tires. I would love to get a tuner (Bully Dog, Superchips or something along those lines), but I haven't found any for the 2009 4Runner. Any ideas or suggestions?

15 is pretty poor. I suppose if you were running 85mph + and are in an AWD V8 you could manage such numbers. At 70 on a good day I get about 17-18. Pushing a headwind at 75 I have seen as low as 16-16.5.

How big are your tires? Hauling anything up on the roof?

The tires are BFG 265/70R17. I was not hauling anything on the roof. The speed limits run from 65 to 80 in sections. My 4runner is a V6.

Cruise control can definitely contribute to bad mileage. Mostly because all CC is worried about is maintaining constant speed, at whatever the cost. Even rapid acceleration up hills. This is all maintained speed versus gradual acceleration you get from your foot.

But that information is contrary to everything that I have ever heard or experienced. It would seem to me that the problem is in the Toyota systems. The same trip in my old blazer upped my mileage from 18 mpg around town to 21 mpg. My friends with Fords and Nissan's get the same experience. My Toyota is the odd one out.
