4th Gen tire sizing question

I by chance came upon a deal on some Michelin Cross Terrain tires today. Setra of 4 with most of the tread left for $250.00. It's a huge improvement over my stock Dunflops. Problem is they are sized at 255/70/16 instead of the 265/70/16 which is stock on the 4th Gen. We compared the two and the Michelin's actually look larger. However, I'm concerned about purchasing these tires because my spare won't match. I'm afrain to mess up the drivetrain with the odd size. I don't think the size will make much difference in the apperance of the truck. What do you guys think?

your stock tires are:
265/70/16 which equates to:
Diameter of 30.6"
Width of 10.4"
Height of 7.3"

255/70/16 equates to:
Diameter of 30.1"
Width of 10"
Height of 7"

It's not much of a difference from the stock spare but are you interested in downgrading? I'd say look for atleast one w/ the same size or 1 size up (75% instead of 70%).

Good luck

hey ... i have my michelin cross terrains ... they have 4,000 miles on them and are in perfect shape. i'm looking to get new tires for off-roading, so maybe you and i could work something out?

my michelins are 265/65/17s though ... and i assume you're looking for some that would fit on 16" rims.

go to the dunlop and michelin sites and see what they list as the outside diameter of each of these tires. Also check the RPM (revolutions per mile) they list for them. This would give you a very good indication of what the actual size are of these. It is very difficult to compare tires with the eye and no load on them.

OK I looked on their websites and even tirerack.

Dunlop is 30.6" dia as Lance said and the Michelin is 30.2". Dunlop as usual didn't list their RPM. The michelins are 693 RPM.

They both have a section width of 10.2" funnily enough. (Sorry Lance had to check as different manufacturers apply the sizing guide somewhat differently )

So basis estimation is that you will loose 1.5% in diameter, which is not too bad. SHouldn't be an issue with your spare, as most people will end up with a spare that is slightly bigger or smaller over time due to wear and different brands.

But like Lance said do you really want to go smaller on your tires??

Hey Guys and Gals,

Thanks for the input and math calculations (lance and bulldog). I never even thought to do the math out via the websites. Your all are right, I would rather go larger than smaller. Just a really sweet deal on tires that are 10 times better than the Dunflops. I'm think I'm going to pass and keep my eyes out for at least 265/70/16's. I can't tell you how poorly the Flops have held up. With 18,500 on my odometer and truck just turned 1.5 yrs. old, my tires are only about 1/8th above the treadbar. These tires are absolutely junk! I thought my wife was going to shat a brick when I told her I'd be investing in new tires before winter! I got the usual, " Tires already?"

Bulldog- I just noticed you have the Revos. Heard they are sweet. How do they compare to what was on your truck from the factory? I'm concerned over wet/winter traction here in Mass., road noise to a minimum, and the best ride I can get from a All Season SUV tire? What's your opinion on the Revo?

4 Route- If you only had 16" rims, I'd buy them in a heartbeat!

Anybody else on the board getting rid of the Michelin CrossTerrains in 265/70/16???? Let me know!

Sorry man, I would've loved to help you out. But I know you'll find someone with some nice ones that fit 16" rims anyway.

Good luck! And if you get really really discouraged, I'm actually looking to sell my 17" wheels as well. but I do hope you are able to find the Michelins for your 16" rims.

I like the LTD wheels, fits nicely with the interior styling of the Runner.

Maybe that might not be a bad idea to get 17" wheels and Michelins.

Dutchman - - you could try posting a WTB in the classifieds section here, or even over at http://toyota-4runner.org ... there are a lot more 4th gen. people over there who might have the tires you're looking for.

Good idea 4 Route. I may just post that info.

Bulldog- How are the Revo's? Are they truely the best riding SUV tire? They're also about $25-$30 cheaper per tire than the Cross Terrains.

so far I love the Revos. They grip a lot better on road than my Dunlops did, they are a lot better off road as expected, the only thing is that they are slightly noisier on the road than the DUnlops (which were very quiet) but not nearly as noisy as a Mud Terrian or other A/T's I've heard.

I haven't experienced snow with them, but other people rate them highly in snow.

Cool. Thanks for the info. Don't know which way I'll go. Cross Terrains or Revos? We'll have to see!

if you're looking for something for offroading, you'd be better off with the revos.

I say go for the Revo's.....a tad bit expensive but they are worth it. Just read the reviews on Tirerack....you can't go wrong
