4L makes beeping sound

When shifting my 2004 (01/04) 4runner into 4L I get a beeping sound and the 4L light flashes. I believe the manual says bring it in but does not mention the beeping sound. Its going in for an Oil change and I am having a second key made (Can't wait to shell out that 100 for a key).

Anyone have an idea how much this is gonna cost or if it has to a Toyota fix or if a local shop can do it?

Thanks

You are screwed, your 4 low system is not working and will cost several thousand to fix. Most likely the actuator in the transfer case.

Ok ok ok, just kidding.
The beep means you are driving to fast for it to engage into 4L. Come to a complete stop and put it into 4L then drive slowly till it engages.

Yeah my '05 Taco does the same thing sometimes. there are times when it just gets irritable and has to have everything just right to engage. Also are you making sure that you are in neutral?

Anyone else got any feedback as Toyota is taking a gander at it?

Thanks for the feed back, I tried the nuetral deal and all and as of last night it was still being a whinny lil priss and beeping.

I wanted to shot it but realized that may cause more damage and thats not prudent now is it...

Its beeping to let you know its not in 4lo.

Follow the procedure in the manual on how to engage 4lo and everything should work just fine.

US warranty is transferrable and covers drivetrain parts and labor at any Toyota dealership for 5/60.

make sure you're not just going from 2 hi to 4 lo. You've got to be in 4 hi to go to 4 lo. At least that's the case in my 06 taco. Good luck.
