03 4Runner Tranny leak

Has anyone ever had a leak from the automatic transmision dip stick tube? Its not leaking from the pan connection but where the upper and lower tubes meet. The service guy at the local Toyota dealer said he has never heard of this but that something may be clogged and causing a backup or the fluid may be dirty. The truck runs great and the fluid level is full and still nice and red.

Anyone?

Thanks

4th gen auto tranny dip stick

I have a 4th gen sport edition (V8) and I am pretty sure I have covered the tranny pretty good and I didn't see a dipstick. I thought I read online that it did not have a dipstick.

Dip stick only exist for the engine oil. I've never heard that auto transmission dip stick.

I'll have to check mine now... adding to the list of stupid things wrong with my 4Runner.

BTW, the '03 V6 has a tranny dipstick and I think Toyota got rid of it in '04 when they switched to WS fluid.

In '03, the V6 had the 4 speed auto trans, which does have a dip stick to check fluid level. According to the drawings, the dip stick tube connects to a short tube at the trans, and there looks to be an 'O' ring that seals that connection. Most likely, the 'O' ring is leaking, and shouldn't be a big deal to replace. The upper tube is bolted to the trans at the bellhousing. Remove this bolt, and the upper dipstick tube should pull out of the lower one. Check to see that neither end of the connection has been damaged, and install a new 'O' ring and reassemble (remember to lube the new 'O' ring before putting the upper tube into the lower one). Before taking it apart, make sure you have the correct fluid level in the trans. It should be checked when the trans is up to operating temp, idling in park, with the vehicle on a level surface. If the normal fluid level is higher than that connection, then you may have to drain some fluid before you take it apart. And replace it after it is reassembled.

Thanks, do you think this a dealer only part, or the local store might have one (without pulling it to compare generic o-rings).

if you're still under warranty, take it in and have them replace any parts that are damaged.

good luck

It's possible a local parts outlet might have a listing for it, but if I had to guess, I'd say you would have to match it against their generic 'O' ring collection. Then again, it is only an 'O' ring, how much can Toyota get for it?

So I took it to the dealer and it was the o-ring and it was covered by the warrenty. Had the state inspection done and although it passed I have a list of things that need tending too (plugs, cabin air filter, etc.). Anybody know of any cheap online places that can ship to the house? With work, school, and a nine month old, I'm lucky to get the grass cut.

Thanks
