Is your automatic as sluggish as mine?

I have an 88 4runner, 22re, automatic and I was wondering if yours was as sluggish (slow) as mine. Going up hill takes awhile but driving down flat roads it does decent. It will cruise pretty good at 65mph it just takes it awhile to get there. Does anyone else have these issues? If you have, what have you done to get more power? I know gears, cams, exhaust, but what have you done to get a little bit more pep? I just want to hear it from you all what mods you have done, thanks.

frank

I also posted this in ttora but figured i would post here as well. thanks again everybody.

the 22re is inherently sluggish, especially on hills. a 5spd would help it but only slightly. the engine simply doesnt have much power. read this:

Even the 3.0 V-6 is gutless with an automatic. They do okay but sure nothing to brag about.

On the freeway near where I live there's a 6% incline. My 4runner will do about 65 in 3rd gear with it floored. And that's getting a running start at about 75. God forbid if I have to slow down due to traffic, I'll never get back up to 65 before I hit the top.

thanks for the link man, i have been checking his info out quite a bit. i am planning on getting an exhaust in the next couple of weeks and will upgrade to a 2.25 tail pipe. hopefully that will allow the engine to breathe better.

anybody have any luck with headers? i heard they are notorious for leaking, is that true?

I would look into your vacuum system, EGR system, but primarily the throttle position sensor. It tells the computer what gear to be in (in conjuction with 23 or more other dodads) but if your throttle position sensor if off, or the spring is worn out, it wont upshift unless you really FLOOR it, making it seem slower than a 1200 cc motor. I regularly take steepish hills at 70 and it downshifts a couple of gears. Before I changed the TPS it would attempt hills in OD until I smashed the pedal down, but then it would only speed up and not hold the speed.

i replaced the tps last week and it is where it needs to be. it was done by a certified toyota mechanic so i know that is good. i think my problem is i am used to my 05 tacoma and my dad's 94 pickup 22re, 5speed. it runs better after i replaced the pcv valve and rubber grommet. i went up a pretty steep hill today going about 55mph and didn't lose anything at all. it ran pretty good today!!

which exhaust did you go with? part number for the headers? i am very curious as well about the custom intake. got pics? sorry so many questions.

my next plan for the 4runner is a header, high flow cat, flowmaster 60 series delta flow with a 2 1/4 tailpipe. i feel like that may help with my performance gains. after that, i am going to invest in some cams.

those with cams, have you been able to tell a difference? are they worth it?

thanks
