I would atleast unbolt the fuse box and make sure you dont have a wire touching the wall, if not start pulling relays and trace it back. Or pull all of your fuses and put them in one at a time and see what happens. Good luck to you

Presumably, he'd have the good sense to get out of the truck once it started burning. Don't think an electrical fire is life-threatening... unless you're carrying a black powder crammed into the glove box, which I suppose he might given the pic of the deer that-don't-know-what's-coming in his avatar.

if your lights stay on when the fuse is pulled out is a sign of wires touching somwhere because on any normal truck if you pull the fuse it would go off because it would have no power to it

I this for real? if your going to keep driving this truck your just going to cause more damage and spend more money fixing it. park it, trace it, fix it, then drive it. best advice i got....good luck!

I wouldn't drive it... but others have already made that point clear.

I think you'll toast a lot more than a few wires if you continue. I would think finding the short would be easy by now since it has been causing a stink several times. Electrical shorts, in my experience, have a unique smell once they've burned a certain # of times.

Honestly If you have had actual flames there is a good chance your whole loom could be trash, depending of course where the short is and what circuits are involved. By the time a flame appears you are usually well past the temp required to melt the wire shielding.

Interesting problem however....I have never know Toyota wiring to light up unless someone has fiddled with it. I would be interested to know exactly what the problem is.

And just to clarify, don't drive it...Small electrical fires can get out of hand VERY quickly.

So nobody has asked the obvious question here.

Where is the smoke COMING FROM?
find out exactly. Since you don't seem to be horribly freaked out by it starting... let it idle and just watch closely and ifnd the origin.
That's a good place to start looking.

I had that same problem last year, turns out I had water in the headlight relay and if I parked at an incline my lights would stay on or just come on in the middle of the night and set off the alarm

Both your incidents did not involve fire however...a broken switch/relay and a hard short are two different things

unbolt the fuse box from the fire wall and pull the plastic cover off the bottom. Its really easy to do. And it exposes the buisness end of the fuse box.
