Yet another shifter removal question...

I've searched but couldn't find the answer to this one: I don't want to accidentally wreck any parts!

'94 2WD 5-speed truck (W55). The CD I have says to unbolt something on top of the shifter then push down, rotate CCW and remove. Is the shift boot supposed to be pulled up out of the way (from under the carpet) or should I be able to see the bolts any other way? I'm just not sure of the best way to access everything.

It's wicked cold up here and the rubber isn't very flexible. I don't want to rip it trying to remove it. Would appreciate any advice or comments.

TIA

On mine I remove the console surrounding the boot, then remove the boot, then remove the bolts holding the shifter to the trans.

Wow Rob, that was quick.

My boot is under the carpet which seems to be stuck down pretty good. I was expecting to be able to pull the boot out from under the carpet but didn't want to force anything. Maybe the Xtra cabs had a different setup? This is a no-frills model (regular cab, short body).

thanks

IIRC there is a metal plate around the bottom of the boot with sheet metal screws holding the plate to the floor with the bottom of the boot sandwiched between. You will have to pull the carpet back to see them and get them up. Maybe make a small slit in the carpet that will be covered by the console.

Great link - thanks very much.

This truck doesn't have a console but I can lift the carpet I guess.

This is exactly what I did. Small slits at each corner exposed philips head screws holding the plate down. There was another boot (?) underneath that one which pulled right off. Six bolts later and the shifter was in my hand.

The shifter bushing is round nylon (I think) which fits in a metal ring. Still in great shape after 200K miles.

Thanks for the help.
