Write-up: Converting forward shift transfer case to a top shift for crawl box
#1
I know there is some other write ups out there on converting a forward shift transfer case to a top shift for use as a crawl box, but when I was searching for info before I tackled the modification it took me a while to locate a good thread that still had working photos. So I figured one more thread out on the webs can only help others.
So in my circumstance the transfer case in my 4runner is a top shift. a buddy gave me a spare forward shift tcase for free so I had to make it work. You can buy a conversion kit for $110-$150 or more plus shipping. I had to DIY this cuz I'm poor AF with a baby otw.
Dismantle the transfer case.

remove the pin holding the fork to the drivers side shift rail. Dont lose the pin. with the fork off pull out the rail. Do the same for the passenger side rail. For use as a crawl box you do not need the passenger side rail so set it aside. So now you cut off the front part of the rail. This isn't my pic, I cut mine closer to the gate first to be careful not to cut too much.

Once the gate piece is off you can install the rail into the case and check where you can cut it down to fit perfectly. mine doesn't stick out at all.

Then you need to cut the gate off the forward shift piece. I did it at a slight angle to match the forks angle.

Then I test fitted it again in the case and made some reference marks for where to weld the gate onto the fork. Make sure it will clear the case and move easily.

Weld gate on. remove all spatter.

Your dual adapter kit should include gate stock to also weld on here, or just use some 1/4" steel to close the end. I'm waiting for my kit so I'll weld that later. Throw the rail and fork back in and now u can put ur shifter on and test it out.

Tip: when these rails are out, they can be put in 180* out of phase. it will work properly, but your shift detents will not work correctly. be sure on the final install, that the SINGLE detent notch is to the INSIDE. I had to switch mine around.
Congratulations you just converted a fwd shift to a top shift for your dual setup and saved over 100 dollars! Assemble your crawl box to your dual adapter and you're done!
