my alternator stopped working the other day so i took it out fixed the wiring cleaned the alternator,(it was covered in oil) the only thing i found wrong with it was the slip rings were wore out about half way through. i can go online and get new slip rings for about 5.00 bucks. every time i go to the wrecking yard the alternator is missing. damn. the truck is an 88 with a 22r motor and the alternator is the original. i rebuilt the motor ,put new clutch in,got it running ,the only problem i have is if you leave it for a day it won't start unless you give it some ether then i fires right off,i only have about 1 or 2 miles on the rebuilt motor so i will probably check the torque in the bolts and reset the valves. i would like to put ac back in but i need the compressor and brackets, and condenser up front but that is a luxury not a need, of course while i am dreaming i will put cruise control in too.

I don't know if you have power steering, but it seems to be a common problem for the hose that goes to the reservoir to start leaking. Since the power steering pump is over the alternator, a leaking hose might drip on to the alternator. But if you don't have power steering the oil must be from another source. My old alternator was covered in dust, I assumed the dust was from the worn brushes in the alternator.

The brushes could be worn or sticking ,the diode pack could also be bad. I was told by a Toyota tech that you can check the diode pack with a volt ohm meter. Unhook all the wires from the alt then check continuity from the battery post to the case and switch the leads and check again ,there should be continuity one way but not the other.
