I have a 1992 toyota that has trouble staying running. We can get it started if we pour gas into the air vent but once thats gone it stalls out, we replaced the fuel pump thinking that was the problem cause we couldnt hear it running when we turned the key so we figured thats why it wasnt getting any fuel. turns out thats not the problem. any suggetions would b greatly appreciated.

A combustion engine requires fuel, spark, & air to run. Start with the basics & ensure you're getting each. Since it runs with fuel sprayed into the intake, my guess is you're not getting fuel; however, issues with the intake tube or VAFM can cause this also. Check for holes in the intake tube, and verify the VAFM is plugged in.

What engine do you have?? I had a similar issue with my rig. Turns out I had a bad AFM(Air Fuel Meter.) The AMF has a fuel pump activation circuit that turns on the pump when cranking the engine. The little flap inside that measures air flow when cranking closes the circuit and the truck should start. Not sure if your year is the same as mine, but the easiest way to check is to get a small piece of wire and put it into the Diagnostic port on the side of your fuse box under the hood. I used the terminals marked +B and Fp. Again this was for a 93 22RE, hope this helps

If it is fuel injected check the fuel pressure and then make certain the idle air control is clean. if it is plugged, the engine won't idle. it could also be fuel pressure regulator. Did you replace the fuel filter? I'm grasping at straws here. You obviously have spark and air, you're just lacking 1/3 of the equation. The idle air valve is usually located in the throttle body and acts like a controlled vacuum leak that allows the engine to idle.
