Will it start w/o coolant hoses and fan/PS belts?
I just swapped out the timing belt and water pump and want to test to make sure everything went in right without having to take parts back off if I need to get back in the engine.
If I haven't put back the radiator, fan belt, PS belt, or any hoses that connect to the radiator, should I expect the engine to run at all?
So far I've had no luck in getting it to run and don't know if I did something wrong in the timing belt install or if I just won't run without those additional parts.

just double check your work and throw it all together. if it spins freely you are most likely good. do not run a motor without coolant in it. put it all back together. if you have a problem then and cant fire it up we are here to help. and it is probably gonna be something dumb and simple.

Yeah I'm not planning on running it for more than a couple of seconds. I didn't know if there were any pressure related issues that would cause it to not keep turning over. I don't think I took off any air hoses in the process either.
I can get by without any belts either right? Except maybe the alternator.

it's gonna run odd without coolant in it because the temp sensor won't be covered in coolant. So it's a waste of time anyway, Double check all the timing marks before you put the cover back on. (all three marks lining up. If those are lined up the only thing that might prevent you from starting is the distrubtor being off a tooth or two.

Don't need the alternator belt.
Don't run it long.

running without coolant won't hurt anything as long as it doesn't get hot. The coolant doesn't lubricate anything. It will warm up unevenly without coolant being pumped through it, which isn't ideal. but as long as you don't run it for more than a minute or so, you'll be fine.
I do this on all of my major projects (Including the 22RE in my 4runner). Give it a test-fire before buttoning everything up. Can potentially save a ton of time if something's off.
This is absolutely false. The temp sensor will still read that the engine is not up to temperature, and the ECU will adjust the enrichment values accordingly. And once the engine comes up to temperature, heat will transfer from the block to the sensor through the body, so it will still be fairly accurate (ever run out of coolant? the temp gauge still pegs to hot).

if your that worried run some flexible hoses from bottom lower hose to top upper hose..and just fill it with water.. u could run it for a good 10 minutes or so, if you need to check for leaks, and operation...

false? Me and 92 Toy knows what happens to a 22re when the coolant is low and.or has a bubble that hits the coolant temp sensor. Engine practically falls on its face till the bubble works out or coolant is added.

As I mentioned, I did the first startup on my 22RE with no coolant or accessories. Started up and idled just fine.

When the sensor doesn't have coolant around it, it tends to read cold. So if the engine is warm, and/or you put a load on it, it's not terribly happy (although a bubble shouldn't cause that. I'd bet your sensor and/or wiring is bad, giving you a low reading all the time). But for a cold start and idle for 10 seconds or so, no problem.
