Will jeep axles work?
My friend owns a shop, and has a cherokee out back with a bad head.. He knows i am wanting to do a SAS on my 94 yota, and asked if i want the jeep for anything. I havent had time to run out there and measure the axles or anything, so i thought id ask. Anyone know if they would even work? I understand that they come with coils and not leafs. The cherokee is an 87, i think 4 door if that makes any difference. I dont know a whole lot about jeep axles, or swaps too much in general (my brother loves that kinda work, so i let him do it, lol). but would it even be worth it to use those axles? I would probably regear to 5.29s.

i am pretty sure that Cherokee axle would be a Dana 30, c-clip AFAIK....not the strongest axle out there. A Toyota SA is said to be comparable to a Dana 44 Strength wise.
I would recommend sticking with a Toy SA, it is already passenger side diff, the spring pads will be there in the correct location. IMO you will be work ahead not trying to do a jeep axle, especially since you are doing a pre Taco truck.

I think the jeep axle is a pass. side diff also.. I could be wrong though. I was just thinking since i could probably get the whole jeep for like $100. It would also be kinda nice to convert to coils instead of leafs..

Your Toy rear is stronger than any axle that would be in an XJ (Dana 35, Dana 44, or Chrysler 8.25").
The XJ's front Dana 30 is trash, and has the differential on the wrong side for use in your rig.

Maybe ill just get the cherokee, get it to run, lift it like 3 inches and sell it to some 16 yr old for like $4k, haha. I just wish there were toyota trucks in the junk yards around here.. 86-95s are rare for the local junk yards, and they pretty much laugh at you when you ask for pre 86s, lol

on second thought, if you can buy the whole thing for$100, buy it, do a seat swap, grab its console, get the rims (sell em if you dont need em) grab stereo / speakers, any engine accessories, etc.
Sell remaining parts to brake even or make money

cherokee seats are really crappy compared to the SR5 buckets our yotas come with...
i say buy it, see what the motor needs and if its not much, get it running and sell it...
if its gonna cost a lot, part that sucker out or sell it for scrap...
hell, even donate it to charity for a tax writeoff...
anything you can do to make a couple bucks and buy an 85 axle...

Haha, or have an alright 4wd daily to drive while i work on the yota.. My gf and I did just recently break up, so i should have some more money soon, lol.
I think the Cherokee is probably going to need a new head at least.. Ill talk to him when he gets back from his honeymoon, though.
But yes, i did see that video. While i laughed the whole time. A friend of mine drove into a "puddle" on the edge of a lake that was a 5' deep mud pit. Water over his hood, and up above the rear bumper (Grand Cherokee) and somehow my 4 cyl yota pulled him out with no problem (his truck off, but in neutral)

If you can take care of the head gasket yourself, lift it all around with blocks, weld front and rear diff, find some dirt cheap 35's with like 30% tread, tow it to your favorite spot and hammer on it until it dies.

^ i dont have that kind of money to waste, lol. Id be buying me an 85 yota axle if i had that kind of money.
BUT im pretty sure it has coils not leaf springs. I dont think blocks would work, unless theres blocks for coils..

i am pretty sure that it has leaf springs in the rear and coils in the front. you should check and see if it has the dana 44 rear, that in and of itself should bring enough to buy a toyota axle
