31x10.50's all day long, you could even go to a 33's if you be careful, you might get a little in certain conditions.

The tires will fit without any rubbing. My '94 4WD pickup came stock from the factory with 31X10.50's, as did my 4runner. The only thing is that I think that the rims are slightly wider, not 100% sure though

You can even fit the larger tires/wheels from the 2006 models on a 2nd gen:

I got some 31x10.5 wheels on my 4runner this weekend, they fit perfectly without any rub. I also ordered some American racing black rims(AR767). I cant wait to mount them. Next item i need is shocks. Anybody have suggestions. I dont have a clue on what to buy or a good site to buy them from.

As mentioned 31X10.5's were an option stock on stock wheels. You can fit 33X10.5's if you want.

If you are worried about rubbing with a given tire, simply turn the wheel lock to lock and measure the clearances. You will have to measure up like 3 inches or so to imagine where the tire is compressed but you can get an idea of what rubbing you might encounter.
