Why Only one shock in the rear?

I've driven several trucks ranging from a 78 Hilux (when I was 16), an 81 Luv, several Chev's and a 2000 Ford F250 and I could tell when a rear shock wasn't working properly.
So saying one won't notice a difference in ride implies the driver doesn't know his truck, which may be the case, but I can feel the roll in a truck when it has a faulty shock.
