Why are the OEM Denso oil filters so cheap?

I still don't see any real world benefit of using a bigger filter than specified (in this case, the 90915-YZZD1).
The specified filter should last 10,000 miles under "normal" use. I change my oil every 3,000 to 3,500 miles with a new filter, so I don't worry about needing any extra filtering media.
If your engine is in good condition, there should be no need or useful benefit to a larger filter.
If more filtering media is needed, you have bigger problems with your engine than just a filter.

More oil volume is a benefit (albeit a small one), and yes, the more filter area is a benefit. In my case the FJ calls for D3 and the 22RE calls for D1. If the D1 is fine for the 22RE, why not for the FJ? Likely Toyota engineers decided that more filter media was beneficial, so for me, I simply use D3 for both as it makes my life easier and there's no downside to the larger filter on the 22RE.

More filter area gives a reduction to pressure loss due to the volume to surface area.
A higher oil capacity gives a slower temperature transition rate, IE more stable temperature.
My RTE has a remote filter, this gives me an extra quart of oil capacity. It also runs the largest filter I can readily find which gives me another half quart. The end result is something like 30-35% extra capacity, not counting the turbo oil line (which is larger than stock by about 200%)
This is a significant amount of heatsink.
..
The extra pint of oil (from the larger filter) is the difference between 4.5 and 5 quarts. (~=10%)
