Why leak from shifter
Howdy.
"1994" 4runner with R150 speed and chain VF1A (?) transfer.
I have some 5k miles on the vehicle now. Recently (past couple of hundred miles) I've had a pretty fierce leak from "transfer case" somewhere.
I have a new tube from transfer stick port to extension housing port. Plus I know the breathers on extension housing are open. They weren't at first attempt to fix.
after the last 200 or so miles I've been trying to chase down a leak. Definitely not coming from any shaft seals. Yesterday I pulled of the boots because it apparently still leaks. I had put an entire liter of new oil in. Even changed the drain (transfer case) crush washer thinking maybe that was it. It might be slower leak, but for sure I see oil up on top of the case, looks like it is coming out of the rear-ward part of the case-shifter housing gasket. Guess I'm going to pull it back off and put the whatever-the-fipg-stuff is, maybe in place of the paper gasket.
Sound like a decent plan?
Also I am stumped as to why after some 4 or 5k miles, it started dripping so bad.
I get where the oil gets hot, vapors expand etc. But previous I had done several 1500 mile trips. No probs until last month. Maybe a well-oiled rear gate is cool. IDK.
Inputs appreciated. Also thoughts on being liter down on transfer case oil? How bad you reckon that was? Maybe 200 miles total since puddle started to appear.

Follow up in case someone needs to ask.
I pulled the transfer shifter off yet again, and the gasket was completely saturated. So I did a very small bead of FIPG (even at that it was too much). Now onto another 300 miles and no leaks so far.
I even taped a 'paper towel' to the skid plate. Still clean.
I also replaced the t-case breather jobby with one I could blow thru to ensure it works.

Thanks for the update, I'm glad you got it sorted.
I had some trouble with the transfer case pulling oil from the transmission with my dual setup, with the transfer case overfilling and leaking at the t/c shifter. A new seal between the two was the solution for that. In that situation the transmission oil level was low and the t-case was high.
