Talking Who said IFS flex sucks?

As we close on our opening day we had some marl dumped to tidey the place up, and the big rock was just to tempting to not drive on it. IFS might look bad when flexing, but it does flex pretty good.

Don't worry, a SAS is in the future for this rig.

I'll never run anything else but Xterrains. For mud, ice, water...anything these tires are by far the best i have driven on. You have coil-overs thats not fare

Reaaallly.....

Hmmm.

I'm gathering info for my next tire purchase. Thought I'd get real world opinions. I figure Belize is a good practical test for tire durability.

well for tires that are rated for 60,000kms i have put nearly 40,000kms on them and they're still gripping. The bigger the size the better they absorb bumps on the road, 31's are to small, had i known when i got these tires i would have gotten bigger. They are not as loud as Hankook's on the highway. They hold very well in the high heat down here, they really dig in when you want them to. And in 8inch deep, thick mud i can crawl through in 2WD thanks to them.

Also they self-clean all the mud off really well, much better than most other "mud" tires that i have used.

Good to know. Out here in the desert, mud is something I rarely deal with, but I do like having good traction. On the other hand, this isn't a dedicated trail rig, so I need something that will last longer than 25K miles. The BFG TA's are doing well...but I'd like something a little more aggro.

We'll see. I still have a good amount of meat left on the TA's, so it'll be a awhile. I just like to do my homework ahead of time.

Well, just think that i have these xterrains and can get 25MPG highway...so if i put AT's on i could do better. Of course it also comes down to personal preferance. like i said i will never buy anything but these tires for as long as they make them.

I do.

Don't get me wrong. I like my IFS just fine. And I agree that it can flex pretty good for what it is. But it still sucks. To compare:

We have your IFS flex above, and here is my IFS Flex:

Versus a 2nd gen 4runner with a bit more:

Yeah, IFS flex sucks.

there is no Toyota left on that 4runner other than the logo on the grille. i have stock suspension with lowpro bump stops. IFS sucks to monster shocks with crazy drop yea. when i SAS im doing Hilux axle, LC coils, still all stock.

It has a toyota motor, tranny, transfercases, and toyota front and rear axles with toyota guts, toyota diffs. Its pretty much all toyota, except the suspension.

IFS doesn't flex well, but lets go over the purpose of wheel travel.

Off the top of my head, travel does two thing:
  1. keeps both tires (per axle) on the ground. This is obviously super important with open diffs as there is no traction to be found when the tire lifts.
  2. keeps the wheels on or closer to the ground in a tippy "crossed up" situation. I'll explain this better if you want.

If you lock the front end, you solve the first problem. The locker also gives traction when one tire is on a low-traction surface. This summer I saw an F250 (open/open or open/ rr LSD) with huge lift and tires stuck on a boat ramp. He could have had all the travel in the world and it wouldn't have helped him in the least. The guy got pulled up the ramp by a Chevy Astro if I recall.

From: Cincinnati, Ohio - Amelia is the exact place. There is no one else on this site from where I am. Seems like everyone is from Cali or Washington. I guess I need to move.
