I have a 89 5 speed 22re pickup. Its started giving me a whine noise at high rpm right before I shift. It usually happens in 1st when I am pushing the rpm's and I also get it in 5th gear when I get above 65 mph. Truck has 4:88 gears and 33's so 70-75 mph is about as fast as I ever take it.

 

Check oil level in transmission, vehicle level and plug is on drivers side.

 

Its good. I just changed it last week. I had the issue before and after the change.

 

It would be helpful if you could give us engine rpm and mph when the whine occurs. Also, unless you're absolutely sure it's the same whine in 1st gear as in 5th, it seems likely there are two different things going on. 5th gear at 65mph is only about 2800 rpm, whereas I would expect somewhat higher rpms when you're shifting from 1st to 2nd while "pushing the rpm's".

Also, when you say it does it "usually" in 1st, what does that mean? Never in 2nd through 4th? Sometimes? If so, under what conditions?

The key to solving a problem is first understanding and describing as exactly and completely as possible the conditions that stimulate the problem. Or, as someone on this board has succintly put, "a problem well described is a problem half solved."

 

Its a 22re. Sorry I dont have a tach so I cant tell you the RPM's. It will do it in all gears. 1st is just the gear I run the rpms up the most trying to keep up with traffic and all. Yes its the same whine.

 

Drive shaft U-joints?

 

Noise sounds more forward than that.

 

Try rev'ing it up in neutral with the clutch engaged, and then do it again with the clutch pedal fully depressed. That'll help narrow it down. It could even be a bad engine accessory, like a bad alternator bearing, water pump, or power steering pump low on fluid.

 

Power steering pump is a usual suspect. Low fluid or old pump can do it.
The idler for the power steering pump is also a usual suspect for noise.

The alternator usually burns out before the bearings do (as in no charge lights come on when it dies).

Water pump would be a bad one. I have no comment, I've only ever replaced it with the T-Chain. I think you'd see sympton before noise (leaks, vibs, exploding pump housing, overheating).

If it only occurs when driving (moving), not when just the engine is running. It's something in the driveline.
