Wanting to buy a clinometer for my 1990 4Runner, but have no idea where to mount one? heres a pic of my dash: http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/6137/04576557005.jpg

i've always wanted to cut a small "slit" in the top of the dash, right above the AC vents. angle it towards me and make it flat.... alot of people mount it wayyyy off on the passenger side in the indent of the dash pad

I'm pretty happy how mine turned out. It's way back in the center of the dash just behind the lip about 1/4" from the windshield. I angled it a bit toward the driver. But I had to cut off the bottom plastic as it was angled toward the passenger side (the clinometer was only available in Japan where it's right-hand drive).



I didn't drill any holes into my dash... I used a couple of suction cups. And I ran the wire through the defroster vents to the climate control light.

I wish someone made an aftermarket one that had a picture of something other than a Jeep on it... Those go for about $15, but who wants to watch a Jeep on their dash.

 

when your vehicle is flat, the inclinometer show you as flat... but when you're flexed or "at an incline" it shows the degree of the angle...

 

shows altitude in feet and pitch and roll in degrees

 

It lets you know the pucker factor kicks in at less of a tilt than you thought it would.

GO_BLUE!, that looks really good, you said its only available in Japan, is there some website I could find it on? and is the picture a 4Runner? doesn't look like the traditional Wrangler.

 

The tilt gauge isn't really useful unless you really need to see if your truck is level. But the altimeter is useful out here on the West Coast... it lets you know far above sea level you are. Combined with a Thomas Brothers map (http://www.thomas.com) you can figure out which mountain you are on by comparing your altitude to the map.

I wheel out in the Sierra Nevadas and usually wind up on the ranger trails which aren't marked on GPS. My altimeter, Thomas guide and compass ($3, wal-mart) help me figure out where I'm at.

The altimeter works off barometric pressure so it doubles as a barometer. But mainly I got it cuz i like the little 4Runners on the gauges.

I got mine off eBay for about $65 shipped. There's a Yotatech member on here who is in the military that picks 'em out of the junkyards in Japan and puts them on eBay. I believe they are available in either grey or tan but you could probably paint it any color you like.

 

Thanks alot, there are some on eBay, $90-$150 and about $20 to ship, which is pretty high but they do look alot better than the standard, $15 ones.

 

Bought this today from 4wheel parts in Tacoma... mounted it under the clock, perfect little spot for this handy little critter. The smittybuilt ones looked decent but are crappy quality. (and they have jeeps on it, eww...)

OK, just took new pics with the camera on the lowest setting (480KB now) and still getting an error message on the attachment manager. Am I just retarded or wtf?? I only have 468kb of total attachments, hmmmm...

compressed it with windows and one was .1 KB too big still but this one turned out fine, take a look see!

Very simple and pretty cheap but it's smooth as can be; tested it out as soon as I put it in, got it just over 20 degrees or so in my driveway screwing around. I have a giant "mound" to play on....

should be able to reach at least 27 degrees or so before she goes the way she sits right now...

 

Your probaly better off with one of these. They are a "field monitor" from a Prado landcruiser. I think they were available on 3rd gens in JDM as well. It is an all digital altimeter clinometer with a neat "you are moving" indicator that grows the "runway" green in the center and moves faster the faster you go based on the VSS signal. It mounts right where your map lights are and replaces the whole map light cluster. They can be found on eBay sometimes. Do a search on here for "field monitor" and you should get some results/ideas.

 

looks schnazzy! I only wanted a compass/clinometer but an altimeter would be great too... I've seens some decent aftermarket versions of clinometer/compass but usually the compass sucks pretty bad and you can't adjust it. I wear a Suunto watch with altimeter and I always set it to the alti when I'm wheeling just as a reference; having it on the vehicle would be sweet.

i got a couple inclinometer apps and they work great.

 

there you go! iphone... clinometer?? there's an app for that... compass?? there's an app for that... altimeter?? well you get it... hey, maybe you could get all those and have it cycle thru each one every few seconds, or maybe a heads up display of all three or more!
