I ran into another toyota pickup. It is an 88 sr5 4x4. The problem is that the bed is shot but the cab is decent. There is a drop of rust on the very bottom oh the front wheel wells but alittle fender trimming will fix that. I was thinking about putting a flat bed on it but I do not have the time or proper tools to build one. It would be nice to be able to buy one that bolts on. I know that you can buy a toyota new in australia with a flat bed so someone must make a bolt on bed. The other alternative is to buy an aluminum bed and make the mounts. I have seen a couple of these but none in my area. I am looking for idea and prices.

 

I think allpro sells one, but its more for a truggy..
about your best bet is to build one how you want it. They really arent hard to build.

Keep looking around get an idea what you want. A used one modified to fit the Toyota would be easier on the money

Paying for some one to build either a stick or metal bed I would bet would be more then you paid for your whole truck

 

Next summer I want to buy a tube bender and have at it. I plan to construct a tub of very similar dimensions of the stock bed, then hang brand new bedsides from it.

Why not just buy a good used bed, you might ask? What better way to learn how to bend tube!?

 

Just remember with the flatbed, you loose tons of up travel so don't forget to set the bed at least 4-5" higher than the vertical part of the frame or make sure you wheel well the bed. Unless your just using it on the street, then you will be fine.

 

Ok, one of the junk yards that I deal with just got a 1994 single cab pickup in. Would this bed bolt up to the 1988 and how bad would it look. I would have to paint it but that is not a big deal since it will be off of the truck.

build your own flatbed. it's not that hard if you have access to a welder and some basic fab skills. plus you can build it exactally how you want it and it's cheeper and a lot more fun. if your wheeling it i sugest doing like xxxtreme22r said and set it up higher than the frame or put some wheel wells on it that go up. thats what i did. good luck.

 

I'm sure some trailer shop could build you one in a day or two

 

I have seen an 88 with a 92 bed, Im sure it would bolt up but the body lines dont match. I have found 2 flat beds in a salvage yard, but they dont last long. In farming communities there are usually businesses that do conversions, and from time to time they sell used beds. Mine came with a Knapheide bed when I bought it, but it is on a 2 wheel and is used for work not 4 wheeling. So as others have suggested depending on what you want to use it for may want to consider other build factors.

 

Ok I went on the site with the fiberglass beds but I did not see any prices. I have seen others for 1600-2300 plus shipping which is not an option for me. If anybody knows what the price is than that would be great.

Does anybody have a picture of a newer style bed on an 84-88 truck. If it would bolt up an would not look too bad I will get one of the ones that just came into the junk yard that I deal with. The sooner I know the better because toyotas do not last long by me.

 

Ok I am ending this because I have decided from what I have read that a flat bed will attract too much attention. I am goning to replace the bed.

Ok. I thought I was going to pick up one of the two 1994 beds that were at the junk yard but the 2wd one was sold by the time I got there and the 4wd one was wrecked. I think the guy dropped it on its roof when moving it in the fork lift. Now I am back to square one.

The other day I saw a 1986-88 truck like mine with a nice basic flat bed. Now I am brain storming again. I was thinking that if I make it out of steal am I going to have a problem with the stock springs. Any thoughts on that? Has anybody had to upgrade to heavier springs?

Either way the bed is scrap metal and has to come off. I am going to try and get on that very soon but first I need to pull off the right front caliper and replace it since it leaks like crazy. The thing that has been holding me back is the fact that it has been snowing and it is hard to work on the ground in the snow. Once I get the bed off I can get a better idea of the dimensions. Then I want to messure one of my quads and make sure there is enough room.

 

Ok I was on the budbuilt site and I like the basic design of his flatbed and how he used the stock lights in the back. I think I could make a bed like that and then get big mud flaps.
