You're more interested in backspacing than offset: offset is how far from the centerline of the wheel the hub flange is and backspacing is how far from the flange is from the inside edge of the wheel. Backspacing is what will make your wheel stick out.
Here's a pic that outlines the different wheel measurements:

3.75" backspacing is a decent starting point for a wider stance. Remember that the further the wheel sticks out, the more likely it is to hit the body / fender when turning / during compression. Also, the farther out the wheel is from the hub, the more stress it can put on the wheel bearings.

I should add that simply using a wider wheel with the same backspacing will also make the truck have a wider stance.

im probably going to put 15x10s on my 31's so that the tires will stick out 3 inches from fender. gives it a nice stance. i never deflate my tires so a bead unseating is not a problem for me

I'm about to buy new tires, I just got a 2 inch lift on my 1994 toyota pickup xtra cab. It has 235-75-r15 tires at the moment. If I put on 32 11.5 15, will they stick out because it's a wider tire like you were saying above?

Mah corn rows are exploding!

Bump. I'm hoping someone can help me with this. After reading over countless threads I'm still so confused with how to best install 33 x 12.5's on stock wheels. Everyone does it differently with different wheels, back-spacings, etc.

I own a bone stock 94' SR5 ex-cab V6 4x4 currently with 31 x 10.5 BFG tires which have worked great without issue and no lifts or mods but they are shot so I just bought a new set of Hankook DynaPro MT 33 x 12.5 x 15 for mounting on the old OEM stock aluminum 15 wheels (which I still actually like the look of to this day). I know I am going to at least do a 1.5" body lift to start with because I am also cutting out the cab back and part of the bed soon for installing 4Runner seats (crawl through cab mod..and I want the seats to be able to fold down flat so I'm fabbing a 5" recessed box). I also plan to do the 3.4L engine swap next year and know some amount of body lift is required for that to avoid hood modification, but I also did not want to lift the body any more off the frame than is absolutely necessary to fit these new tires and the 5VZ. I don't hate body lifts like a lot of people do but I also don't want to go overboard like some people in Florida lol. I figured 1.5" body lift would suffice but do I need 2" for the 5VZE swap? I've even talked to a guy who did the 5VZ swap and he said he did it with just trimming a few parts under the hood and didn't even do a body lift at all. I have to though because of my seat box.

Does anyone know if I would be ok with just a 1.5" body lift and maybe 1" BJ spacers for the 33 x 12.5's? Will I also need any wheel offset spacers (maybe .5") if using the stock aluminum 15 x 8 wheels? If the stock wheel backspacing is 4.75 do I need a lot less? Would .5" wheel spacers up front compensate enough if needed? I also plan to add ball joint spacers in a few months because I'm going to do the 63" springs mod (my old leafs are flat as pancakes right now) but until I know what exact springs I'm buying, how many leafs, and how much lift that will yield in the rear, I'm just not sure what exactly will need to be done up front height-wise with ball joint spacers to keep the truck looking level. I think I've also read in a few places that using BJ spacers any taller than 1" can cause issues. (so again..what body lift height if only 1" BJ spacing?)

Lastly, I live in San Diego. I'm just building this up as a general weekend trail rig. We are moving north in a few years so the goal is to prep for mild to moderate mountain trails. I'm not into building a serious rock crawler or swamp machine. I really just want the minimal heights and offsets needed to fit the 33 x 12.5s on the stock 15's.. All advice would be greatly appreciated!
