Arrow Whats more reliable?

OK so what would be more relaible. A 1994 reg. cab 4x4 4cyl 5-speed with 145,000mi or a 1991 ext. cab 4x4 5-speed v-6with 105,000? I know the the 4cyl gets better gas mileage and thats a big concern with me but what would be more reliable as far as a daily driver and somehting i could hit the trails with. And is the 4cyl called a 22r or a 22re? noob question..lol

the 4cylinder is going to be more reliable. The 4banger in the 94 will be the 22re. The only difference between the 22r and 22re is the fuel system. R=carb, RE= fuel injected

both motors are babies..... 145k is nothing. the 22re is a bullet-proof engine. very strong, lots of after market parts, very reliable. the 3.0 (v6) is also a ok motor. depending on the year they can be known for head gasket issues. and tehy are commonly referred to as the 3.Slow around here. they tend to be underpowered. but still strong motors. the 3.0 in my 4runner gave me NO problems (until i recently hydrolocked and broke a rod) with 205k on the odo.

a 22-r has a carb. which ended production in 87. the e stands for electronic fuel injection. which a 94 would have. so its a 22re.

*edit* crolison beat me to it.

What's better, apples or oranges. Your buying 10-15 year old vehicles with limited history, both are a gamble. But I'd probably go with the 94 as well.

I'd say the 4 banger is more reliable even with the higher miles. I had 217k on my '91 before I sold it, and the only problem I had was replacing the starter contact points twice. The 3.0 has problems with blowing the head gaskets. I'm not sure when you should start worrying about that but my brothers blew at 124k and then again at 178k so......
Oh and 4 cyl. is the 22RE.

check for bondo (knock on body panels as you walk around teh truck. it should sounds hollow if it sounds dense all of a sudden there is bondo.) look under the truck looking for leaks, look for wet diffs where oil is leaking. rear axle seals, (look for oil on tire) check all fliuids. looks for burnt smelling ATF (if its an auto). look for the color of the motor oil. look at the color the the anit-freeze.

www.photobucket.com host the pictures, then link them to your post.

There are die hard 3.0 fans, but they are hard to find these days. I for one would rather get the v6.

you could save yourself the time and trouble and spend alittle extra for something with a 3.4 if possible. not sure what you plan on doing with the vehicle but if you plan on keeping it for quite a while a 3.4 would be a better investment in my opinion. Im not sure what your situation is though

edit. Sorry forgot to point out that if you are considering a V6. Even a newer 2.7 maybe an option to consider. But that 22re is virtually bullet proof if maintained.

looks like there is a small lift on it... i'm going to guess a 2" body lift.

a 3,4 would be nice but that looks like a good rig.

3.4 is on 96 and new rigs.

Agian I dont know your situation. If you have time to hmmm and haw go test drive all 4. The 3rz(2.7 4 cylinder) and 3.4(V6) were from 96-02. That is a nice looking truck. I believe the 3rz is just as reliable as the 22 along with more power and torque and better mpg. but that is a nice looking truck.

i dont know a whole lot about the 6 cyl. but i know the 22re is one of the longest lasting, most reliable engines you will ever find i will never swap out my 22r (same as the 22re with the exception of the fuel delivery system) when mine takes a crap, (if i live that long) im getting a new one. i would guess there is a 3" lift on that truck. and i would say definitley go for the 22re

If that 22RE is pulling oversized tires and not regeared, do not expect it to be more reliable. Built trucks with that engine wear 'em out fast. In a stock truck, it's a different story. The 3.0 V6 puts out more torque at idle than that 22RE does peak.

Also, drive it and see how you like the power. Everyone's idea of fast enough is different. I for example, cannot stand the 22RE as it is way to small for my 4runner.
