1986 Extended Cab SR5:



I know the shelf goes on the bracket but what's missing around the speaker? Also, is something missing below the bracket where the wood (which makes me laugh by the way) has been put?

 

There was probably a trim panel there that was removed when the speaker was installed.

The wood was probably put there to add a little support to the bracket. That bracket doesn`t look all that strong on its own, so the wood probably helped alot.

 

Does anyone have a pic they can post of what this would look like factory?

 

I was thinking the same thing. No idea what it is called or how to find a replacement though

 

Here's what the factory rear speakers looked like(square ones in the middle are for the rear in an Xtracab). If that helps.

 

Thanks for the drawing. That would probably be correct if the factory speaker bezel was not square with equidistant holes and plastic "blind nuts" (90189-04014 in your diagram). The OPs photo shows nothing of the sort having been installed.

Likely, a previous owner had installed some custom speaker and somewhere through history the speakers were changed several times. There's a hole which looks like maybe latex or some other sealant was used to plug it, and the obvious nicotine stains show where once was placed a square something-or-other.

Either way I appreciate the input! Hopefully I can solve this mystery. I thought about just buying some factory panels to replace them and be done with it. I'd like to see a pic of someone else's "factory" extracab though.

 

I'd show you a pic of my '91, but the interior is different. It has little doors with thumb latches that come out right where your speakers are: tool kits and jacks were once stored in the holes; and the bases for the jump seats are formed metal so they don't come out so no need for wood bracing. I do have an access panel under the driver's side rear jump seat also- stereo amp fit nicely in there.

For some reason, I want to say the rear jump seats were optional in the early xtra-cabs, and were made standard in the 89+ models. Don't quote me though. That is based on some research I was doing a while back when trying to figure out how to add some speakers and bass in my wife's 91 and I found enclosures for the earlier ones had humps in the middle to accomodate the driveshaft hump in the floor of the body.

 

Nothing there on my truck.

The whole panel or just where the speaker is in your pic?

 

the stock speaker cover was there to hold the original 4" speakers.
i changed mine out to 6" coaxial speakers like yours.
the bracket is a simple right angle that bolts to the cab structure. the wood was for reinforcement so it could support more weight and be destroyed by too much weight.
there is also a support in the middle of the shelf.

 

 

Wow - thanks gents. Those pics really helped. So did some extracabs come stock with speakers and some not? I ask that because 85TurboRunner's pic there is no speaker but there is on Matstaley's and Donomite49 mentions that he had a stock speaker spot back there?

 

I finally found a shelf for sale and got it over the weekend. It's grey as well but the grey on it is lighter than the grey of the carpeting along the back of my extracab. Is that normal? It's out of the same year/model truck so that surprised me. I know the carpet on the shelf is factory though. I'll post some pics soon.

 

Kick ass! Did speaker covers come factory with "Toyota" on them or did you do that?

 

Its not actually my truck. Just one I saw. I pulled my panels and there is a factory cut out in the sheet metal. I just installed a couple speakers in mine this week.
