Whats this junk in my oil pan

Well my truck lasted till the end of school. driving home on grad night it started to lose power and started making the classic rod bearing knock.

Dropped the front diferential today and pulled the oil pan in order to change the rod bearings. while digging through the silvery gunk that was left in the pan i found these. any idea what they are? or how screwed my engine is?

here they are clean

Oof! Looks like thrust washer/s to me.

See if you can man handle the crank back and forth. Sorry- bad joke. Seriously though....

The engine may be ok in the cylinders... the crank is gonna need to be turned and polished at the least if it moved a bunch!

Not a good scenario there man....

Might look into full rebuild. That isn't a cheap fix.

How many miles on the thing now? They typically don't just fall out, what hapened exactly?

Yeah... the crank might be salvagable. Only way to tell is look at it. Did the engine sieze?

Hard to tell what shape the engine is in from oil pan pics. Sorry.

I had a set fall out once, but it was helped by a 3200lb pressure plate.

Years of abuse and improper oiling can wear them down (notice the score marks) can cause them to slip out under certain conditions.

You need to pull the crank out, and examine the block and crank surfaces between the thrust washer locations. A machine shop might be able to polish them, but chances are you'll be looking for a new block/crank.

the first pair look really worn, while the second are just bent. if i remember right, the lobes on the crankshaft look kinda like the first pair. i'll go look again in the morning.

how much am i looking at for a rebuild if i do it myself?

If everything can be machined/ saved... the typical is between 5-700 dollars for the machine work and a master kit runs roughly 3xx, so between 8 and a grand if you do it.

OR, you could hit the yards for a donor and work with that for much less, maybe surf craigslost for a used one.

Lots of options at this point, running that motor isn't one.

Probably right around $400 for the machine work + hot tank, depending on if your crank is usable (hopefully it is) then you need at least rings, timing components, gaskets, and a new bearing set. Maybe around $1k if you don't get carried away like I did

It has somewhere around 300K on it. The engine started making a knocking sound when i would accelerate a little, or when i let off the accelerator, being the last week of school, i didnt have the time to try and figure out what was wrong with it, and hey it still moved right. on the way home from graduation i lost a lot of power, noticed the oil pressure dropping, and it started to make a new noise (rod bearing). I towed it the last mile and started to work on it today.

the engine turns over fine. the car will even drive, but it doesn't sound nice and probably isnt very good for it.

I'll take some more pics in the morning.
