Whats the best way to get more HP 22R-E?

Whats the best way to get more HP 22R-E?

Cold air intake, new headers or muffler, turbo? I am just curious what people have done and stuff. If money wasent an issue I would be doing all that stuff and more. But what are some cost effective ways say under a grand to do something significant?

There's an article in Tech Write-ups. The author put in a racing cam plus a header and exhaust, and intake/battery swap. Other than regearing, there's not much more you can do...cost effectively...or under 1k. Even then, these mods would run you real close.

$1000 will get you a cam, header, cold air of sorts, and exhaust. Assuming you can do all the work yourself.

I agree with DeathCougar. A new cam and a header would be the best bet. If I were doing it, I'd have the head bored and throw in some new pistons as well. It's really not an engine that's meant for going fast, so it's like polishing a turd in a sense.

Haha. I have a 22R, and it's been a godsend so far. I love the engines, but all I'm saying is that if you're looking for power, you might wanna look elsewhere.

Not for under a grand, though.

I really like my 22RE, also. Stock as it is, it's capable of quite a bit. But, I'd be I'd be quite satisified with souping up mine a bit and regearing. It's all I really need.
These little motors are so easy to pull and work on. I've had big Chevy and Chrylser motors. Lots of power, but quite the hunks to work on!
To note, I pulled my 78 Plymouth 4x4 (dead as a doornail) up a steep, muddy hill all with my little ol' 4 banger....and no lockers. I suppose good gearing and good mud tires says a lot, too.

This question comes up all the time. Search the forum and read, read, read. The 22R has pretty decent support in the aftermarket, sort of the small block Chevy of imports. The best bang for your buck is cam and header, beyond that it's up to you how much you want to spend. Personally I think the most critical thing on an R-series motor is to gear the truck right.

Yo,

As noted, cam, header, cold air intake and low restriction exhaust is about it for less than $1000. Enginebuilder has a mid range cam that works great. Get an adjustable cam gear and fine tune it by degreeing the cam. I would also pull the head and have a quality valve job done at the same time. Block is tough as an anvil and will take a lot of abuse. If the head is cut more than a clean-up, the cam goes retarded. The adjustable cam gear fixes this. You could venture into a CT-26 turbo from a supra and don't have to intercool it since the boost is only about 1/2 atm. Will need an OEM turbo exhaust mainfold which are hard to find. Don't go there without time and money.

Go to LC Engineering's website, I think its lcengineering.com. They have all sorts of parts to get the alot out of your engine. It give you a great place for ideas. You can also call them and speak to an advisor. I have used them before and they are very helpful.

Thanks for the replys guys.

How do I go about regearing, would I need a new tranny?

As you can probably tell I am not that mechanical. I did a number on my first car trying to wire in a stereo and fix things my self; kind of scared to wreck my truck since it is my daily driver. I mean cold air intake seems easy enough, but headers and cams seem beyond my skills.

At any rate I am so pleased with the performance of my truck, I just had a valve adjustment and it runs like a top. I know it aint no sports car, I just want it to do a little better going up hills.

They mean regear your differentials depending on what tire size you have assuming they are larger than stock.

it pulls a lot better than before but it still is'nt very fast (and i run 235/75/15 for the summer)

For a grand the best way to get more power out of a 22-RE is to sell the truck for $1000 or whatever it is worth, through another grand at it and buy a beater Mustang 5.0 or Camaro 5.7 and call it a day.
