what is wrong with my 4 runner?

i just replaced the head gaskets and valves in my 1991 toyota 4runner 3.0 v6 and it try's to start but it wont and it backfires either through the exhaust or shoots a big fireball out of the intake think maybe the timing at the crank is off or at the camshafts? dont have timing marks to tell if if in time correctly kid i bought from lost them. any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks

Timing marks got lost....?

My guess is your distributor if off 180. Mine backfired through the intake after my HG repair... and I was off 180.

distributor off 180 degrees

i'm a noob a these toyotas do i have to just spin the rotor 180 and stick it back together?

It's possible even though your timing mark (I still can't understand where yours went) reads 0, you are on the wrong stroke of the motor.

Pull the distributor, roll the engine one full turn back to 0. Re-install the distributor and see if that changes anything.

It worked for me.

what's wrong with my 4runner

i have no way of knowing because the previous owner didnt bother to put the cover back on that shows where the zero is he also welded the pulley's to the crank is there one aftermarket i can buy that will show the the numbers position?

HFS your kidding right, about welding the pully? I hope your only 180 out.

I don't know how you are going to set the timing without marks to refer to. You are going to have to replace the cover.

Generally, there are stamped or raised marks on the respective engine parts from the factory, but you won't be able to see those when the engine is turning.

As far as the pulley being welded to the crank... sounds like this engine is a bit of a mess.
