I am finally getting around to tearing down my 1991 4runner with a 3.0 and auto tranny and start my SAS. I bought it with a bent front bumper, but that didn't matter as I will do an aftermarket winch bumper. When I got the stock bumper off I found this block that I circled in red in the pictures. There was a plug attached to it originally, but must have gotten broken off when they bent the front bumper. You can see the plug and 2 wires that originally attached to this block in one of the pictures. What is it and what purpose does it serve? The 4runner runs great except for the A/C not working.

Honestly I dont know, my best guess would be a sensor for the a/c. There is a sticky thread at the top of the forums that links to a full service manual for you vehicle.

Air bags???

 

that is kind of what I was thinking but I am pretty sure that there would be two, one sensor on each side...

 

Its a 91....No air bags that year.

 

An outside air temperature probe?

 

That is the A/C condensor fan motor resistor.

Hmmmm.....if thats the case I wonder if thats why my A/C isn't working.

 

It just controls the condenser fan slow speed.The A/C will work without it.Your trouble is elsewhere.

 

Yep...you are right. I just went out and held those wires against the resistor with the engine running and A/C on and the A/C worked no differently.
