What is the purpose of a rocker arm spring?

Searched all over Google and cannot find anything explaining these, not even the patent for them >.<

Don't overthink this. The springs are required to keep the rocker arms pushed over in proper alignment with the cam lobes.

It would be possible to dispense with the springs by using shim collars, but more costly.

Just seems odd and risky to use them and allow the "possibility" of the rocker arms sliding sideways and hitting each other, especially if there is never a point where the sideways movement is utilized.. why not just have them in fixed positions..? But maybe you're right and I'm just overthinking it lol.. I guess I could see why they would want to save on unnecessary iron(?) usage and weight..

Is that the screw you use to adjust the valves, or the flat piece of the rocker arm that rides on the cam? Either way still don't think the risk is necessary to do such things..

Trust the physics, there are no lateral forces it's cycling up and down.
