What material to make shackles?

I may want to make a shorter shackle when I insall some new rear leaf springs.

I was wondering what all different materials could be used. I have access to some relatively cheap (or free) hot rolled flat bar, 6061 or 7075 aluminum flat bar, and possible some 304 stainless.

Most of the stuff is 3/8" thick by about 2" wide. But it varies.

I like the idea of using stainless (no rust) but was told it might be more brittle.

I never thought of using aluminum until I saw all-pro makes an aluminum shackle plate. Plus aluminum is so much easier to work with.

What do you guys think of the different materials, and how they'll hold up? Or should I just stick with good old steel.

plain old flat bar will never let you down, and if you're in doubt, just stick with it.

then again 6061 Aluminum is pretty good stuff, and I'm sure would work just fine. Only problem with using aluminum, is that if you plan to weld the nuts to one side, you have to use TIG, and it's a good idea to heat treat it afterwards.

mild steel is easy to work with. Just use the nitrite coated bits and use some motor oil and drill slow with pressure. Dont let the bit heat up!!

3/8x2" is perfect. Stainless is fine too, but a real biatch to drill. I use mild steel.
