what is the horn ring

what is the horn ring and how do you get to it, when i turn my steering wheel i hear this rub i believe someone suggested it could be this and to put a dab of grease on ity but how do i get to it, do i pull the steering wheel off, thanks for any help or info on this, truck is 86 no tilt wheel

yes pull the wheel off. there is a plunger that after time wears out putting. grease on it works for awhile

I just fixed a bad plastickly 'rubbing' sound on mine, here's what I did.

If your '86 is the same as an '88, there's a screw holding the horn pad down. The screw is located at 6:00. Turn the wheel upside down, remove the screw, then remove the horn pad.

I then removed my steering wheel. Underneath that are a few bushings for the steering shaft, etc, and you'll see the brass spring loaded horn shaft and ring. Clean the brass parts and ring with an eraser. Grease. Squirt some grease down past the steering shaft, work it in with your fingers if you hafta.

Reassemble.
