What the heck? V6 diff with 4cyl crush sleeve?

What the heck? V6 diff with 4cyl crush sleeve?
So I have a full floating one ton rearend off of an unknown donor truck under my RV.
The carrier is V-6, the housing for the 8" diff is also V-6.
However, the pinion shaft takes the smaller 4cyl crush sleeve. (Which i ruined last night!!!)
How can everything but the pinion shaft be 6cyl? I compared the old sleeve to two different sleeves at an offraod shop locally, and it was the smaller of the two sleeves. How can this be?
