Recently got a 91 3.0 PU for a really good deal and was wondering what would be some of the best things to upgrade on it. It's pretty much stock except for tires and wheels

Myself before spending money on fancy goodies get all the neglected maintenance caught up.

Because there is always going to be areas that were neglected.

Brakes and Suspension parts in good shape ?

Vacuum hoses are good for being hard and brittle

Coolant system in good shape ??

Gear oil no doubt needs changed .

 

Good starting rig. As mentioned what do you want it to be mostly, daily, weekender, etc. It does not take long to get deep in the wallet. Hash out your best plan & above all play safe. Any mods needs to be done correctly. Have fun with it. Take progress pics to share with everyone.

 

service everything and make sure your truck runs top notch.
get manuals and learn online about fixing your truck.
get basic recovery gear and know how to use it. make sure to at least have a hook-less tow strap and a good rear recovery point and a 2nd vehicle when out wheeling. get a matching sized spare tire.
when you start to wheel, build slowly as you go and adapt to each change...or dive in with deep pockets and upgrade in big steps. personally, I'd just get some sliders and go have fun. later you may decide you need lockers, gears, bumpers, skids, t-cases, bigger this, bigger that.... you get the point....

Thanks everyone. It's mainly gonna be a DD but I'm plan on going in some mud every now and then but nothing crazy. I do eventually want to try to get some plate bumpers for the front and back but don't really know the best ones to go with.

 

if you're going into mud a lot, I strongly recommend the solid recovery points front and rear. in front most of us still have a factory tow hook, which will work if it's all you got. in rear there really isn't anything good to grab hold of unless you have a tow hitch and a lot of trucks didn't even come with a rear bumper let alone hitch.

there really isn't any "best bumper" to go with. look at the styles available and choose. all will be better than what it is now. getting into the hobby is not cheap so make a plan of attack. also if you're doing lots of mud and water, get some differential breather extensions installed so you don't suck it up into your axles.

best advice would be to simply start reading as many build threads and forum threads as possible and see what others have done. everything is here at the click of the search button. good luck
