What details to look for, before purchase?

I'm considering buying a 1990 runner 3.0 5spd 4x4. Are there any specific detail I need to check out? The body is great, interior is OK. Seems like the clutch is a little weak and there is more play in the shifter than others I've looked at.

Depending on where you're from the frame should be checked very closely for rust. I'd take a ball peen hammer to it and anywhere that deflects is a weak spot. Also check real well between teh gastank and frame rail. See if the recall was done on the HG and then look at the milage.

Finally have a good mechanic look it over to ensure you are getting a good truck.

since youre looking at a 1990 model, i dont know if this would benefit you, but a lot a really nice upgrades were made in the 1994 model. same body styling if thats what youre looking for, but adds some extra strength to the doors and body and other minors. just something to think about. i believe there may have been a brake upgrade? could be wrong. check into it.

I called the toyota dealership and checked the VIN. All recalls have been done, except the steering. I will put it up on a hoist tommorrow and get a good look at everything, including the frame. I noticed when cold it idle rough and the settled once it was warm. The guy says it has a small coolant leak, and I noticed some oil burn off from below the front pully. I am considering doing a 3.4 swap on this but I wouldn't mind driving it for 6 months first. oh yeah it has 202K and he says probably won't pass emmissions? I am very curious about the shifter play, can that be linkage or internal?

probably the shifter bushing, not expensive to fix at all. use that repair to try knocking the price down.
