Welded front 3rd ?'s

Anyone have a good solution for a welded front 3rd? I have a welded 3rd in the 85 solid axle and don't want to have it welded any more so whats your best ideas for fixing it? I have 5.29's and would like to keep from replacing the the whole unit. i will be going to a e-locker soon but need to make it through winter first.

Ummmm new gears? Isn't that pretty much the only solution?

I guess it would depend on how the welded it.

Unless they welded the gears to the carrier.

See if anyone wants to trade an open for a welded.

Welded fronts make turning terrible. Selectable is where it is at. Swap your welded 8" for an open 8". Shouldn't be too hard to find. If you just elded up the spider gears and not to the carrier too then just swap spider gears.

As long as it is only the spider gears that are welded, simply remove the third, buy another differential, remove the welded spider gears, and put in the new ones.

As long as the weld job was done reasonably, and isn't some abomination, it should take you a day or so on the weekend.

I suggest visiting Zuk's site for info on removal of the spider gears:

www.gearinstalls.com/v6lockrite.htm

The process is the same, just instead of a lockright, you put in unwelded spiders.

If I understand your question, Harleyman, then maybe you need a new CASE(4- cyl model? with 1 crosspin?)....just swap the carrier bearings over and ring gear and set BL and CBPL to the same spec as before. Then it will be as good as gold. I have a spare case if you can't find one. ZUK

You should have called me about that truck cause I know everyone in Alabama with a Toyota 4x4.

My guess is that it is welded properly and well as I know they have built several Toyotas and lots of off-road trucks.

Have you opened the diff up yet to look? You can probably pick up another 8" open diff for not much. They are on my local board all the time. Full set of 850 Toyota axles went for $300 last week.

No I have not opened it up yet I have been rebuilding my Harley Motor and trying to get everything lined up to rebuild the motor on the truck I just want to get an idea of what I will need to do to fix the welded front when I get to finally get to doing it I plan to be driving it by Christmas welded or not just trying to get a heads up on what will be easiest to do for the front.

I found the spider gears but braincramped the cross pin, Guess I ended up using it. If you still want the spider gears how about $6 to ship them to you.
