I just did a head gasket and timing chain on my 93. all went back together fine. runs great. Need to adjust valves to get rid if a tick.

Here's the weird part. I put a timing light on it and it is about 3 inches before the scale. so I guess about 30 btdc. when I retard it back I can only get it to the 12 btdc mark before I run out of room on the distributor to adjust and it runs rough and has no power.

Could I have got the valve timing off a link? I would think that it would not run so strong with no matter what I did to the ignition timing. if it is possible is there a way to verify without pulling the timing cover off to get to the bottom sproket?

 

It's a 22re.

 

Most likely you incorrectly re-inserted the distributor, off by one tooth. (there are 13 teeth on the helical gear, so off one tooth is about 28°) Don't feel bad, this is common. I would just pull out the distributor and insert it following the instructions; or you could set it at TDC and remove the distributor cap to look first.

 

Double checked the distributor. 5 btdc on the pully. bug at 1 cylinder and the electronic pickup lined up all as per the book.

I have been driving it for a week like this and it runs strong. 3/4 tank of gas through it... jumped the diagnostic port and had the flashing CE light. and the timing ligjt shows 30 or so degree advance.... could my light be off by 25 degrees?

Light is good. used a buddies light shows 30 btdc too. hooked the snap on computer to it, show 870 rpm at idle and 28 btdc. take it to 5 and it will barely idle and won't drive.. I set it back to 30 and am driving it....

 

TPS not showing throttle closed. Not on base timing.

I agree with scope103. I did this very same thing. Moved the distributor one tooth and bingo all was good.

 

I'm with millball on this one. Are you jumpering Te to T1 when using the timing light to set timing? If you are and the truck doesn't go into base timing mode, your TPS is likely out of adjustment.

 

Tried that and got it to 5btdc and it won't stay running.

 

What should the check engine light do with te and t1 jumped? Right now when I jump them and get a rapid study flashing of the check engine light.

 

That is normal. It is what it's supposed to do when the jumper is connected.

 

That is normal for an 85-87 22re. He has a 93. The later 22re should show no flashing check engine light with Te to T1 jumpered. Check 4crawlers website, it has good info on this.

With the engine fully warmed up, when you jumper Te to T1 it is audibly noticeable that the engine goes into base timing mode, and on your 93 the check engine light should not be blinking unless there is a code stored.

My '87 22re does flash for sure, I'll be timing my '88 22re soon; I'll keep watch on what it does.

 

TPS reads open on idl switch constant. off to Amazon.com. will report if new tps gets it right.

 

93 fsm shows 2 flash per second as normal conditions with no codes present....

 

Milball and rasalabri nailed it. before I ordered a new tps I did an adjustment on the tps and it came into adjustment. jump the port. timing light on and it worked perfect. I was only a couple degrees of by ear. thanks all.
